🔧 Tacoma - Spark Plug Replacement
Your Tacoma uses a V6 with six spark plugs under the coil packs. This job is straightforward, but there is limited space on the rear bank, so take your time and keep dirt out of the plug tubes.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool completely before starting. Hot aluminum threads can be damaged easily.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing ignition coils.
- Keep grit and debris out of the spark plug wells.
- Do not drop the new spark plugs. The electrode gap can be damaged.
- Use a torque wrench. Over-tightening can strip the cylinder head.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 12mm socket

- 6-inch extension
- Spark plug socket, 14mm thin-wall with rubber insert

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Clear the area around the engine so dropped hardware is easy to find.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the engine cover fasteners, if equipped, then lift the cover off.
- Use a flat-blade trim tool to release any intake duct clips or retainers blocking access.
- Set all clips aside where they will not get lost.
Step 2: Disconnect the ignition coils
- Use your hands or needle-nose pliers if needed to release each coil electrical connector.
- Unbolt each coil with a 10mm socket.
- Pull each ignition coil straight up and out.
- Keep the coils in order.
Step 3: Clean the spark plug wells
- Use compressed air to blow dirt out of each plug tube before removal.
- This helps stop debris from falling into the cylinder.
Step 4: Remove the old spark plugs
- Use a spark plug socket, 14mm thin-wall with rubber insert, a 6-inch extension, and a 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen each plug.
- Turn counterclockwise carefully until each plug comes free.
- Lift each plug out slowly so it does not drop.
Step 5: Install the new spark plugs
- Check that each new plug is correct and undamaged.
- Start each plug by hand using the spark plug socket and extension.
- Thread them in gently to avoid cross-threading.
- Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Hand-start every plug first.
Step 6: Reinstall the ignition coils
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot if desired.
- Push each coil straight down onto its spark plug.
- Install the coil bolts with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 7: Reassemble the intake and engine cover
- Reinstall any intake ducting or covers removed earlier.
- Use the 12mm socket and trim tool as needed.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for a smooth idle.
- Check for misfire, shaking, or a check engine light.
- If the engine runs rough, recheck coil connectors and plug seating.
- Take a short test drive and confirm normal power delivery.
