šŸ”§ Q50 - Spark Plug Replacement

Replacing the spark plugs restores strong ignition, smooth idle, and good fuel economy. On your Q50, the plugs sit under the ignition coils on top of the engine, so the job is mostly careful disassembly and reassembly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

Assumption: Q50 2.0T uses the M274-style coil/plug layout.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a fully cool engine to avoid stripping aluminum threads and burns.
  • āš ļø Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes—debris can damage the cylinder.
  • āš ļø If you disconnect the battery, use a 10mm wrench and remove the negative terminal first.
  • āš ļø Don’t over-tighten plugs—aluminum cylinder head threads strip easily.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-60 Nm range)
  • Spark plug socket 14mm thin-wall (magnetic or rubber insert)
  • 3/8" drive extension 6"
  • 3/8" drive extension 12"
  • External Torx E8 socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Flat trim tool
  • Pick tool
  • Compressed air blow gun
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs (iridium/platinum, correct heat range for Q50 2.0T) - Qty: 4
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock a rear wheel.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool completely (ideally 1+ hour).
  • Have your new plugs out of the box and keep them clean—don’t drop them.
  • Take a photo before unplugging connectors.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and access the coils

  • Lift off the plastic engine cover by pulling straight upward (use a flat trim tool if it’s stubborn).
  • If an intake tube/duct blocks access, loosen clamps/fasteners using a 10mm socket and move the duct aside without forcing it.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the 4 ignition coils on top of the valve cover.

Step 2: Unplug ignition coil connectors

  • At each coil, release the electrical connector lock using a pick tool, then pull the connector straight off.
  • Don’t pull on the wires—only pull on the connector body.

Step 3: Remove ignition coils

  • Remove each coil hold-down bolt using an external Torx E8 socket (some setups use a 10mm socket; use what fits correctly).
  • Pull the coil straight up to remove it. If stuck, gently twist while pulling.
  • Set coils aside in order (cylinder 1-4) so they go back to the same spot.

Step 4: Clean around the spark plug wells

  • Blow out each plug well using a compressed air blow gun.
  • This prevents grit from falling into the cylinder when the plug comes out.

Step 5: Remove old spark plugs

  • Use a 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and 6" or 12" extension to loosen and remove each plug.
  • Turn counterclockwise slowly. If one feels extremely tight, stop and work it back-and-forth gently.

Step 6: Install new spark plugs

  • Check each new plug for damage and correct part number.
  • Thread each plug in by hand first using the spark plug socket 14mm and extension only (no ratchet) to avoid cross-threading.
  • Once seated, tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Do not use anti-seize on plated plugs.

Step 7: Reinstall coils and connectors

  • Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (the rubber ā€œsockā€ that seals to the plug).
  • Push each coil straight down until fully seated on the plug.
  • Install coil hold-down bolts using an E8 socket (or 10mm socket, as equipped) and tighten: Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect coil electrical connectors until they click/lock.

Step 8: Reinstall intake pieces and engine cover

  • Reinstall any intake ducting and tighten clamps/fasteners using a 10mm socket.
  • Press the engine cover back down until it snaps into place.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds. It should run smooth with no shaking.
  • If you have a check-engine light, scan and clear codes after verifying everything is connected (a basic OBD2 scanner can do this).
  • Take a short test drive and re-check for any roughness or fuel smell.
  • If it misfires, re-check coil connectors first.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $60-$180 (parts only)

You Save: $190-$270 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
