🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

On your Tacoma, the spark plugs are service items that wear out over time and can cause misfires, rough idle, poor fuel economy, and hard starting when they get old. This job involves removing the ignition coils and replacing all six plugs with the correct gap and torque.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cool engine only. Hot aluminum threads can strip easily.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils.
  • Keep dirt out of the plug wells. Debris can fall into the cylinders.
  • Do not over-tighten the spark plugs. Use a torque wrench.
  • Use anti-seize only if specifically allowed by the plug maker; many modern plugs are pre-coated.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 14mm spark plug socket
  • 6-inch extension
  • 12-inch extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Trim clip tool
  • Compressed air
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs - Qty: 6
  • Ignition coil boots - Qty: 6
  • Valve cover grommets - Qty: 6
  • Throttle body gasket - Qty: 1
  • Intake manifold gasket set - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Label vacuum hoses and connectors before removal so they go back in the right place.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Set the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery terminal.

Step 2: Remove the intake ducting

  • Use a flat blade screwdriver to loosen the air intake clamps.
  • Unclip and remove the intake tube for access to the top of the engine.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking plastic clips.

Step 3: Remove the upper intake parts

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the upper intake fasteners.
  • Disconnect any hoses and electrical connectors attached to the intake pieces.
  • If the throttle body comes off, replace the throttle body gasket.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coils

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove each ignition coil hold-down bolt.
  • Pull each coil straight up and unplug the connector.
  • Mark the coils by cylinder if you plan to reuse them.

Step 5: Clean the plug wells

  • Use compressed air to blow dirt out of each spark plug well.
  • Check that no debris falls into the cylinder openings.

Step 6: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Use a 14mm spark plug socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to remove each plug.
  • Turn each plug out slowly to avoid cross-threading damage.
  • Stop if a plug feels stuck; do not force it.

Step 7: Install the new spark plugs

  • Check the plug gap before installation if the plugs are not pre-gapped.
  • Thread each new plug in by hand first using the spark plug socket and extension.
  • Tighten each plug to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs) with a torque wrench.

Step 8: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Push each coil fully onto its spark plug.
  • Reinstall the coil bolts with a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten coil bolts to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reassemble the intake

  • Reinstall the intake manifold and throttle body parts in reverse order.
  • Reconnect all hoses and electrical connectors.
  • Tighten intake fasteners to the factory-spec torque for that component.

Step 10: Restore power and test

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check for misfires, rough idle, vacuum leaks, or warning lights.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the engine starts cleanly and idles smoothly.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
  • If the check engine light returns, scan for misfire codes.
  • Recheck intake clamps and hoses after the first drive.
