🔧 Camry - Spark Plug Replacement

On your Camry, the spark plugs sit at the top of the engine under the ignition coils. Replacing them restores smooth starting, fuel economy, and prevents misfires as the plugs wear over time.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

Assumption: Stock engine cover and ignition coils.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a fully cool engine to avoid burns and prevent stripping aluminum threads.
  • ⚠️ Make sure the car is OFF (not in READY). Keep the key fob at least 10 feet away.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring; press the connector lock tab and pull the connector body.
  • ⚠️ Avoid dropping anything into the spark plug holes; dirt can damage the engine.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-30 Nm range)
  • 6" 3/8" drive extension
  • 12" 3/8" drive extension
  • 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket (rubber insert or магнит type)
  • Flat trim tool
  • Compressed air blow gun
  • Feeler gauge (1.1 mm / 0.043" blade)
  • Small pick tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Iridium spark plugs (Denso SK16R11 or equivalent) - Qty: 4
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Power the car OFF (do not leave it in READY) and let the engine cool completely.
  • Open the hood and remove any loose items near the engine bay.
  • Have compressed air ready to blow debris out of the plug wells before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Lift the plastic engine cover straight up by hand (it’s held by rubber grommets).
  • If it feels stuck, use a flat trim tool to gently pry upward at a corner.

Step 2: Unplug the ignition coil connectors

  • On each coil, press the connector lock tab and pull the connector off.
  • If the tab is stubborn, use a small pick tool to gently lift the lock while pulling.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coils

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the single bolt holding each coil.
  • Twist the coil slightly, then pull straight up to remove it from the spark plug tube.
  • Keep coils in order; set them aside neatly.

Step 4: Clean the spark plug wells

  • Use a compressed air blow gun to blow out dirt from each spark plug well.
  • This prevents debris from falling into the cylinder when the plug comes out.

Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Insert a 14mm thin-wall spark plug socket with a 12" extension and 3/8" ratchet down into the well.
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen, then spin the plug out carefully.
  • If a plug feels extremely tight, stop and re-check that the engine is fully cool.

Step 6: Check the new plug gap (do not bend iridium tips)

  • Use a feeler gauge (1.1 mm / 0.043") to confirm the gap.
  • Iridium plugs are typically pre-gapped; if it’s off, replace the plug rather than forcing the gap.

Step 7: Install the new spark plugs

  • Start each plug by hand using the spark plug socket and extension only (no ratchet at first).
  • Thread it in clockwise until fully seated by hand to avoid cross-threading (damaging the aluminum head).
  • Torque each spark plug using a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • No anti-seize on plated threads.

Step 8: Reinstall ignition coils

  • Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (the rubber sleeve that seals to the plug).
  • Push each coil straight down until it fully seats on the plug.
  • Install the coil bolt using a 10mm socket, then torque with a torque wrench: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect connectors and reinstall cover

  • Reconnect each coil electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the engine cover by aligning the grommets and pressing straight down by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car (READY on) and listen for a smooth idle.
  • If the engine shakes or the check engine light comes on, re-check coil connectors and coil seating.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration with no warning lights.
