  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells—debris can fall into the cylinder and cause engine damage.
  • ⚠️ Do not use anti-seize unless the spark plug manufacturer specifically says to; most modern plugs are nickel-coated and anti-seize can cause over-tightening.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • Let the engine cool completely (at least 1 hour after driving).
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket and move the cable aside.
  • Take a quick photo before removing hoses.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover / access panels

  • Remove any top engine cover/ducting by releasing clips with a trim clip removal tool and loosening any clamps with a flathead screwdriver.
  • If your Veloster has top-mounted charge-air/intercooler ducting over the coil area, loosen hose clamps with a flathead screwdriver and remove the ducting for clear access.

Step 2: Unplug and remove the ignition coils

  • Locate the 4 ignition coils on top of the valve cover (one per cylinder).
  • Press the electrical connector tab and unplug each coil connector. If it’s stubborn, use needle-nose pliers gently—don’t pull on the wires.
  • Remove each coil hold-down bolt using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Twist the coil slightly and pull straight up to remove it. (An ignition coil is the part that makes the high voltage for the spark plug.)
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) when reinstalling the coil bolts.

Step 3: Clean the spark plug wells

  • Use a shop vacuum around each spark plug well to remove loose dirt.
  • Blow out each spark plug well using a compressed air blow gun while wearing safety glasses.

Step 4: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Install a 5/8" spark plug socket on a 3/8" extension and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Loosen and remove each spark plug counterclockwise.
  • If a plug feels like it’s binding, stop and work it back and forth gently to avoid damaging threads.

Step 5: Check the new plug gap (if applicable) and prep the coils

  • Use a feeler gauge set (inch/mm) to verify the gap matches the spec provided with the OEM-spec plugs for your Veloster turbo. Don’t force-bend fine-wire iridium tips.
  • Apply a small dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (the rubber “socket” that seals to the plug).

Step 6: Install the new spark plugs

  • Start each spark plug by hand first (use the spark plug socket and extension without the ratchet) and turn clockwise several full turns to ensure it’s not cross-threaded.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (3/8", 5-60 Nm range).
  • Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs) for the OEM-style gasket-seat plugs used on this engine.

Step 7: Reinstall the ignition coils and reconnect everything

  • Reinstall each coil straight down onto its spark plug.
  • Install the coil bolts using a 10mm socket and tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect all coil electrical connectors until they click.
  • Reinstall any ducting/covers removed earlier, tightening clamps with a flathead screwdriver and reinstalling clips with a trim clip removal tool.
  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds; it should run smooth with no shaking.
  • Listen for any hissing (intake/boost leak) if you removed charge-air ducting.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal power delivery and no check-engine light.
  • If a check-engine light appears, recheck coil connectors and that every coil is fully seated.
