🔧 Sierra 1500 - Spark Plug Replacement

You’ll be replacing all eight spark plugs on your 5.3L V8. This helps restore smooth idle, power, and fuel economy, especially as the factory plugs wear out.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate (patient beginner can do it) | Estimated Time: 2–3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely; hot exhaust manifolds and heads can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Keep metal tools and jewelry away from the battery positive terminal to avoid short circuits.
  • ⚠️ Work in Park, on level ground, with the parking brake firmly set.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on ignition wires; always pull on the coil boot or connector body.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery negative cable, you may lose radio presets and trip data.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🛠️ 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 🛠️ 3/8" drive torque wrench (5–60 ft-lbs range)
  • 🛠️ 5/8" spark plug socket
  • 🛠️ 3/8" drive 6" extension
  • 🛠️ 3/8" drive 3" extension
  • 🛠️ 10mm socket
  • 🛠️ 8mm socket
  • 🛠️ 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🛠️ Needle-nose pliers
  • 🛠️ Flat trim tool or flathead screwdriver (small)
  • 🛠️ Feeler gauge set (spark plug gap gauge)
  • 🛠️ Magnetic pickup tool
  • 🛠️ Shop light or LED work light
  • 🛠️ Mechanic’s gloves
  • 🛠️ Safety glasses
  • 🛠️ Fender cover or thick towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Spark plugs (iridium, correct for 5.3L) - Qty: 8
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease (for ignition boots) - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🔩 Throttle body/intake cleaner spray - Qty: 1 (optional for light cleaning while access is open)
  • 🔩 Shop towels - Qty: 1 pack

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the truck on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Shut off the engine and let it cool for at least 45–60 minutes.
  • Open the hood and install a fender cover or towel where you’ll lean over.
  • Optional: Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket to avoid accidental shorts while working around ignition wiring.
  • Lay out your new plugs in a clean area; do not drop them, as that can damage the ceramic or the gap.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove engine cover

  • Gently pull up on the plastic engine cover in the center; it snaps off rubber grommets.
  • If it feels stuck, use your hands only; no tools are needed here.
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get stepped on.

Step 2: Identify ignition coils and plug layout

  • Each cylinder has its own ignition coil on top of the valve cover, with a short rubber boot going down to the spark plug.
  • Your 5.3L has four coils on the left (driver) bank and four on the right (passenger) bank.
  • Work one cylinder at a time to avoid mixing up parts.

Step 3: Prepare new spark plugs

  • Use the feeler gauge set to verify the gap on each new spark plug; GM spec for most 5.3L 2019 plugs is around 1.02 mm (0.040"). Do not widen or close the gap on iridium plugs unless clearly out of spec.
  • Do NOT apply anti-seize to the threads; GM plugs have a special coating and anti-seize can cause over-tightening.
  • Place a very small smear of dielectric grease inside the top of each coil boot only (not on the metal tip).

Step 4: Access the first ignition coil (driver side front is easiest)

  • On the driver side front coil, locate the electrical connector.
  • Use the small flathead screwdriver or your fingernail to gently lift the locking tab, then pull the connector straight off the coil body.
  • If a coil bracket or small cover is in the way, remove its bolts with an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.

Step 5: Remove ignition coil and boot

  • Remove the coil mounting bolts using an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet; keep the bolts in a small tray.
  • Gently twist the coil and boot assembly while pulling upward to release it from the spark plug.
  • Set the coil where dirt will not enter the boot.

Step 6: Remove old spark plug

  • Install the 5/8" spark plug socket onto a 6" extension and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Lower the socket straight down onto the plug. Make sure it fully seats on the hex.
  • Turn the ratchet counterclockwise to loosen and remove the plug. If it feels very tight, apply steady, smooth pressure.
  • Lift the extension and socket out; the plug should come up with it. If it drops, use the magnetic pickup tool to retrieve it.

Step 7: Inspect old plug and plug hole

  • Check the old plug for heavy oil, carbon, or damage. This can hint at engine issues, but for now just note anything unusual.
  • Shine the LED work light into the plug hole to ensure no debris is present.
  • Do not crank or start the engine with plugs removed.

Step 8: Install new spark plug

  • Insert a new plug into the 5/8" spark plug socket; the rubber insert should grip the plug.
  • Lower the plug into the hole carefully using the extension by hand.
  • Turn the extension by hand clockwise at least 4–5 full turns before using the ratchet; this prevents cross-threading.
  • Attach the 3/8" ratchet and snug the plug.
  • Attach the 3/8" torque wrench to the extension and tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
  • Stop when the torque wrench clicks; do not over-tighten.

Step 9: Reinstall ignition coil

  • Inspect the coil boot for cracks; replace the coil if damaged.
  • Align the boot with the new spark plug and push straight down until you feel it seat on the plug.
  • Reinstall the coil mounting bolts using an 8mm socket and tighten evenly to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) with the torque wrench set to inch-pounds if available.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 10: Repeat for remaining cylinders on driver side

  • Move to the next coil back on the driver side and repeat Steps 4–9 for each cylinder.
  • Some rear cylinders are tighter; use the combination of 3" and 6" extensions to get the best angle.
  • Always finish one cylinder completely before starting the next.

Step 11: Replace plugs on passenger side

  • On the passenger side, access may be tighter around the HVAC and wiring harness.
  • You may gain a little access by gently moving hoses or plastic ducts aside; do not disconnect fluid lines.
  • Repeat Steps 4–10 for all four passenger-side cylinders.

Step 12: Reinstall any brackets and the engine cover

  • Reinstall any coil brackets or small covers using the 8mm socket and tighten snugly.
  • Place the engine cover back over the top of the engine and press down firmly until all grommets snap into place.

Step 13: Reconnect battery (if disconnected)

  • Reattach the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket and tighten it securely.
  • Make sure the clamp does not move on the terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle. It should start easily and idle smoothly without misfires or flashing check engine light.
  • Listen for any ticking or hissing sounds around the plug areas; unusual noises may mean a loose plug or coil not fully seated.
  • Take a short, gentle drive. Check for smooth acceleration and normal power.
  • After the test drive, shut the engine off and recheck under the hood for anything left loose or out of place.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350–$550 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $80–$140 (parts only)

You Save: $210–$470 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop about 1.5–2.0 hours.
