🔧 Sierra 1500 - Spark Plug Replacement
On your Sierra 1500, the spark plugs sit under the ignition coils on top of each cylinder head. Replacing them restores smooth starting, power, and fuel economy—especially if you’re due by mileage or have a misfire.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a fully cool engine to avoid burns and stripped threads.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes—blow/vacuum debris before removing plugs.
- ⚠️ Do one cylinder at a time so connectors/parts don’t get mixed up.
- ⚠️ Do not over-tighten spark plugs; use a torque wrench (it measures tightening force).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the key off and away from the truck.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-30 Nm range)
- 10mm socket
- 5/8" spark plug socket
- 3/8" drive 6" extension
- 3/8" drive 12" extension
- 3/8" drive universal joint
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Compressed air blow gun
- Shop vacuum
- Feeler gauge set
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Spark plugs (iridium, correct spec for Sierra 1500 5.3L) - Qty: 8
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool completely (best: sit 1-2 hours).
- Open the hood and remove any loose items around the engine bay.
- Take a quick photo of each side before starting.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)
- Grip the cover firmly and pull upward to release it from the rubber grommets.
- Set it aside where it won’t get stepped on.
Step 2: Choose one cylinder and clean the area
- Pick one ignition coil to start with (front of either bank is easiest).
- Use shop vacuum to remove loose dirt around the coil and plug area.
- Use compressed air blow gun to blow out debris around the spark plug well.
- Keeping grit out prevents engine damage.
Step 3: Unplug the ignition coil electrical connector
- Use a small flathead screwdriver only if needed to gently help release the connector lock.
- Press the tab and pull the connector straight off (don’t pull on the wires).
Step 4: Remove the ignition coil
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the coil mounting bolt.
- Twist the coil boot slightly, then pull the coil straight up and out.
Step 5: Remove the old spark plug
- Install the 5/8" spark plug socket on a 3/8" drive extension (use the universal joint if access is tight).
- Turn counterclockwise with the 3/8" drive ratchet and remove the plug.
- If it feels extremely tight, stop and work it out slowly to avoid thread damage.
Step 6: Check the new spark plug gap and prep the coil boot
- Use a feeler gauge set to confirm the new plug gap matches the spec for your Sierra 1500 plug set.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the coil boot (a thin smear). This helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier.
- Do not put grease on plug threads.
Step 7: Install the new spark plug (hand-thread first)
- Start the new plug by hand using the 5/8" spark plug socket and extension only (no ratchet) until it seats.
- This prevents cross-threading (damaging the threads in the cylinder head).
- Set your 3/8" drive torque wrench and tighten the spark plug: Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall the ignition coil
- Push the coil straight down until you feel it seat onto the plug.
- Install the coil bolt using a 10mm socket, then tighten with the 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 9: Repeat for all 8 spark plugs
- Repeat Steps 2–8 for each cylinder, one at a time.
- Use the 12" extension and universal joint for the rear cylinders if needed.
- Rear plugs are tight—take your time.
Step 10: Reinstall the engine cover
- Align the cover with the mounting points and press down firmly to seat it.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. It should run smooth.
- Listen for any “tick” or misfire and re-check any coil connectors that may not be fully clicked in.
- If you had a check engine light for misfire, it may clear after a few drive cycles; otherwise, scan and clear codes.
- Do a short test drive and confirm no warning lights return.
