🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement
Your Sierra uses coil-on-plug ignition, so each spark plug is reached by removing the ignition coil from the cylinder head first. On the 5.3L V8, the job is straightforward, but clean access and careful torque are important so you do not crack a plug or strip the aluminum threads.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool completely before starting. Hot aluminum threads are easy to damage.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging coils.
- Keep dirt out of the plug wells. Blow debris out before removing any plug.
- Do not use power tools to install spark plugs.
- Handle coil connectors gently. The plastic locks can break if forced.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 5/8-inch spark plug socket
- 3/8-inch ratchet
- 3/8-inch extension set
- Torque wrench
- Flat-blade trim tool
- Needle-nose pliers

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Make sure the engine is cool to the touch.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
- Work one cylinder at a time to avoid mix-ups.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect battery and open access
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the engine cover if equipped. Pull it straight up by hand.
- If needed for access, loosen the intake duct using a flat-blade trim tool and remove it.
Step 2: Remove ignition coil from cylinder 1
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the ignition coil bolt.
- Unplug the coil connector carefully. Use a flat-blade trim tool only if the lock is tight.
- Pull the coil straight up.
Step 3: Clean the plug well
- Use compressed air nozzle to blow dirt out of the spark plug tube.
- Do not let debris fall into the cylinder.
Step 4: Remove the old spark plug
- Use a 5/8-inch spark plug socket, 3/8-inch extension set, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the plug.
- Turn slowly and keep the socket square so you do not round the plug.
Step 5: Install the new spark plug
- Check the new plug gap only if the part listing requires it. Many are pre-gapped.
- Start the plug by hand with the 5/8-inch spark plug socket and extension.
- Tighten with a torque wrench to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Hand-start every plug to protect the threads.
Step 6: Reinstall the ignition coil
- Add a small amount of dielectric grease inside the coil boot if needed.
- Push the coil fully onto the plug.
- Install the coil bolt with a 10mm socket and tighten to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the coil electrical connector.
Step 7: Repeat for all remaining cylinders
- Move one cylinder at a time and repeat the same steps.
- Keep removed bolts and coils organized by location.
Step 8: Reassemble and reconnect battery
- Reinstall the intake duct and engine cover if removed.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle smoothly.
- Listen for misfires, ticking, or an unplugged coil.
- Check the dash for a check engine light.
- If the engine runs rough, recheck every coil connector and plug torque.
