🔧 Tucson - Spark Plug Replacement

On your Tucson, the spark plugs sit under the ignition coils on top of the engine. Replacing them restores smooth starting, power, and fuel economy, and prevents misfires that can damage the catalytic converter.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a cold engine to avoid burns and protect aluminum threads.
  • 🛑 Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes; debris can damage the engine.
  • 🛑 Don’t pull on wiring; press the connector tab and pull the plug body.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required, but disconnecting the negative cable helps prevent accidental shorts.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" extension set (3" and 6")
  • 5/8" spark plug socket (rubber insert or магнит insert)
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10-30 Nm range)
  • Small flat trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Compressed air blow gun
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs (OEM-spec iridium) - Qty: 4
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully (at least 1 hour after driving).
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
  • Take a photo before unplugging anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Grab the plastic engine cover and pull straight upward to pop it off the rubber grommets.
  • If a corner is stubborn, use a small flat trim tool to gently lift under the edge.

Step 2: Unplug and remove ignition coils

  • Each cylinder has an ignition coil (the long black module sitting on the valve cover).
  • Press the locking tab and unplug the coil connector by hand (use needle-nose pliers only to help press the tab if needed).
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolt.
  • Twist the coil slightly, then pull straight up to remove it from the spark plug tube.

Step 3: Clean around the spark plug wells

  • Use compressed air blow gun to blow dirt out of each spark plug hole before removing the plug.
  • Wipe any loose debris with shop rags.

Step 4: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Install the 5/8" spark plug socket on a 3/8" extension and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen, then remove the plug carefully.
  • If one feels extremely tight, stop and re-tighten slightly, then loosen again slowly.

Step 5: Install the new spark plugs

  • Verify the new plugs match the old ones (same length and tip style) before installing.
  • Start each plug by hand using the spark plug socket and extension only (no ratchet at first) to avoid cross-threading.
  • Once finger-tight, use a torque wrench to tighten each plug: Torque to 18-22 Nm (13-16 ft-lbs).
  • Do not use anti-seize on plated plugs.

Step 6: Reinstall ignition coils

  • Put a small dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (the rubber “socket” that snaps onto the plug). Dielectric grease helps seal out moisture; it is not a conductor.
  • Push the coil straight down until it fully seats on the spark plug.
  • Install the coil bolt with a 10mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 9-10 Nm (80-89 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Align the cover with the grommets and press down firmly at each corner.
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds; it should run smooth with no shaking.
  • If the check engine light comes on or it runs rough, re-check that every coil connector is fully clicked in.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal power and no misfire symptoms.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $45-$120 (parts only)

You Save: $130-$405 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.8-1.2 hours.
