🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

Your 1500 uses the 3.6L Pentastar V6, which has spark plugs under the ignition coils on top of the engine. Replacing them restores smooth idle, better fuel burn, and can fix misfires or rough acceleration.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before starting. Hot aluminum threads can be damaged easily.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing coils. This reduces the chance of accidental misfire or electrical damage.
  • Work one cylinder at a time so the ignition parts do not get mixed up.
  • Do not drop debris into the spark plug wells.
  • Use a spark plug socket with a rubber insert to avoid cracking the new plugs.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3-inch extension
  • Spark plug socket 5/8-inch
  • Torque wrench
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Dielectric grease
  • Anti-seize compound
  • Gap gauge
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs - Qty: 6

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Keep dirt away from the plug wells.
  • Lay out the old plugs in order.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the terminal.

Step 2: Remove engine cover

  • If equipped, lift off the engine cover by hand.
  • If it feels stuck, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove ignition coil connectors

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to release the coil connector locks.
  • Press the tab and unplug each coil connector.
  • Work one cylinder at a time so you do not mix up parts.

Step 4: Remove ignition coils

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolts.
  • Pull each coil straight up and out.
  • Twist slightly if a coil is stuck.

Step 5: Remove old spark plugs

  • Use a 5/8-inch spark plug socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove each spark plug.
  • Turn counterclockwise slowly to avoid cross-threading damage.
  • If a plug feels tight, back it out a little, then continue.

Step 6: Prepare and install new spark plugs

  • Check each new plug gap with a gap gauge. The gap should match factory spec for your engine.
  • If needed, adjust only slightly and carefully.
  • Install each plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Once seated, tighten with a torque wrench to 13 N·m (115 in-lbs).
  • Hand-start every plug first.

Step 7: Reinstall ignition coils

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
  • Push each coil fully onto the new spark plug.
  • Reinstall the coil bolts with a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the coil bolts to 8 N·m (71 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect electrical connectors and battery

  • Reconnect each coil connector until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the engine cover if removed.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
  • Listen for smooth running and check for any misfire or check engine light.
  • Take a short test drive and verify normal acceleration.
  • If the light returns, scan for stored misfire codes.
