đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool completely (ideally 1+ hour after driving).
- If you plan to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative terminal and keep it from springing back.
- Set your new plugs aside and check the gap with a spark plug gap gauge (gap = the small space between the center and ground electrode). Use the spec on the under-hood label or the plug box for your exact plug set.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover
- Lift the engine appearance cover straight up by hand to pop it off the rubber grommets.
- Set it aside where it won’t get stepped on.
Step 2: Unplug the ignition coils (one at a time)
- Locate the 4 ignition coils on top of the engine (one per spark plug).
- Use a small flathead screwdriver only if needed to help release the connector lock, then pull the connector straight off.
- Do one coil at a time to avoid mix-ups.
Step 3: Remove the ignition coil
- Use an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolt.
- Twist the coil slightly, then pull straight up to remove it.
- If it feels stuck, keep wiggling gently—don’t pry hard on plastic parts.
Step 4: Clean around the spark plug well
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow out dirt/debris from the spark plug hole area before removing the plug.
- Wear safety glasses for this step.
Step 5: Remove the old spark plug
- Install a 5/8" (16mm) spark plug socket on a 3/8" drive ratchet with a 6" or 10" extension.
- Turn counterclockwise to loosen, then remove the plug fully.
- If it feels extremely tight, stop and tell me—forcing it can damage the threads.
Step 6: Check and install the new spark plug
- Check the plug gap using a spark plug gap gauge and adjust only if your plug manufacturer allows it (many fine-wire plugs should not be bent much).
- Thread the new plug in by hand using the spark plug socket and extension (no ratchet at first) to avoid cross-threading.
- Once it seats, tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
- Hand-threading first prevents expensive thread damage.
Step 7: Reinstall the ignition coil
- Apply a very small smear of dielectric grease inside the coil boot (the rubber part that goes over the plug).
- Push the coil straight down until it fully seats.
- Install the coil bolt using an 8mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the coil connector
- Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.
- Gently tug to confirm it’s fully seated.
Step 9: Repeat for the remaining cylinders
- Repeat Steps 2 through 8 for the other 3 spark plugs.
Step 10: Reinstall the engine cover
- Align the cover with the grommets and press down firmly by hand until it snaps into place.
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it using a 10mm wrench.

- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds. It should run smooth with no shaking.
- If the check engine light is on or it runs rough, re-check that every coil connector is fully clicked in.
- Take a short test drive, then re-check for any unusual sounds or warning lights.
