On your X3, spark plugs wear over time and can cause misfires, rough idle, poor fuel economy, and hard starts. This job is mostly about careful access, keeping dirt out of the engine, and torquing the new plugs correctly.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a cold engine; hot aluminum threads strip easily.
  • 🛑 Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes; blow out debris before removing plugs.
  • 🛑 Do not smoke or create sparks near the engine bay.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the key away from the vehicle so it can’t wake up electronics while connectors are unplugged.

  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-60 Nm range)
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3" and 6")
  • 16mm thin-wall spark plug socket (magnetic or rubber insert)

  • Torx T25 screwdriver

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, put the shifter in Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully (at least 1 hour after driving).
  • Open the hood and remove loose jewelry/clothing that can snag.
  • Assumption: stock ignition coils and factory intake layout.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Use your hands to pull the engine cover upward (it’s held by rubber grommets).
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently lift an edge, then pull straight up.

Step 2: Create working room at the back (cowl/microfilter area)

  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver and/or Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the fasteners for the upper cowl/microfilter housing pieces as equipped.
  • Use a 10mm socket if you have any 10mm nuts/bolts in that area.
  • Lift the cowl/microfilter housing pieces out of the way for better access to the rear ignition coils.

Step 3: Unplug the ignition coil connectors

  • Each cylinder has an ignition coil (the “coil” is the plug-wire replacement that sits directly on the spark plug).
  • Use a small pick tool to help lift the connector lock if needed, then unplug the connector by pulling on the connector body (not the wires).
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before unplugging.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coils

  • Grab the coil and pull straight upward while gently twisting.
  • If a coil is stuck, use a plastic trim tool under the coil’s base and pry very gently while pulling up.
  • Set coils aside in order (cylinder 1 to 4) so they go back where they came from.

Step 5: Clean around the spark plug wells

  • Use compressed air blow gun to blow dirt and sand out of each spark plug well.
  • This prevents debris from falling into the cylinder when the plug comes out.

Step 6: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Install the 16mm thin-wall spark plug socket on a 3/8" drive extension and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove each plug.
  • If a plug feels extremely tight, stop and re-check that the engine is fully cool.

Step 7: Install the new spark plugs (by hand first)

  • Put the new plug into the 16mm spark plug socket and lower it into the hole.
  • Thread it in by hand using only the extension (no ratchet at first). This helps prevent cross-threading (starting the plug crooked and damaging threads).
  • Once it seats, install the 3/8" drive torque wrench and tighten to Torque to 23 Nm (17 ft-lbs).
  • Do not adjust the gap unless the plug maker specifically says to; these are typically pre-gapped for this engine.

Step 8: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Apply a very light smear of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (the rubber sleeve). Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier.
  • Push each coil straight down until it fully seats on the spark plug.
  • Reconnect each coil connector until it clicks/locks.

Step 9: Reassemble the cowl/microfilter area and engine cover

  • Reinstall the cowl/microfilter housing pieces using the Torx T20 screwdriver, Torx T25 screwdriver, and 10mm socket as applicable.
  • Press the engine cover back down into its grommets until it snaps into place.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds. It should run smooth.
  • If you get a check engine light or misfire, re-check that every coil connector is fully locked and each coil is fully seated.
  • If you have a scan tool, clear any stored misfire codes and confirm they don’t return.
  • Take a short test drive and re-check for any warning lights.
