Tools, parts, spark plug gap tips, and torque specs for coils and plugs to fix misfires and rough idle for 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018
🔧 Focus - Spark Plug Replacement
Changing the spark plugs on your Focus restores strong ignition, smooth idle, and good fuel economy. On your 2.0L, the plugs sit under the ignition coils on top of the engine, so this job is mostly careful disassembly and reassembly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧯 Work on a fully cool engine to avoid burns and thread damage.
- 🧤 Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes; debris can fall into the cylinder.
- ⚡ Avoid pulling on wiring; press the connector tab and pull the plug straight off.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but if you’re nervous around electrical connectors, disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Spark plugs (iridium/platinum, correct fit for 2.0L) - Qty: 4
- Ignition coil boots - Qty: 4 (optional, if torn/oil-soaked)
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the key off.
- 🧊 Let the engine cool completely (at least 30-60 minutes after driving).
- 🧼 If the top of the engine is dusty, wipe it down so dirt doesn’t fall into the plug holes.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)
- Grip the cover and pull straight up to release the grommets (no tools on most covers).
- If yours uses fasteners, remove them with the correct socket (often 10mm socket).
- Pull up evenly to avoid cracking it.
Step 2: Unplug the ignition coil connectors
- Press the connector locking tab and pull the connector straight off each coil.
- If a tab is stubborn, gently help it with a small flat trim tool (do not pry hard).
Step 3: Remove the ignition coils
- Remove each coil hold-down bolt using a 7mm socket or 8mm socket (your Focus may use either head size).
- Twist the coil slightly, then pull it straight up to remove it from the spark plug tube.
- Set coils in order (cylinder 1-4) so they go back to the same place.
Step 4: Clean around the spark plug tubes
- Use compressed air blow gun to blow out each spark plug well before removing the plug.
- This prevents grit from dropping into the engine.
Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs
- Use a 5/8" spark plug socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and a 3/8" drive extension to loosen and remove each plug.
- A spark plug socket is a deep socket with a rubber insert that grips the plug.
- If a plug feels extremely tight, stop and work it back and forth gently to avoid stripping threads.
Step 6: Check the new plug gap (only if required)
- Use a feeler gauge (inch) to verify the gap matches the plug maker’s spec on the box.
- If your replacement plugs are iridium and marked “do not gap,” do not bend the electrode.
Step 7: Install the new spark plugs
- Start each plug by hand using the 5/8" spark plug socket and extension (no ratchet at first) to prevent cross-threading.
- Once seated, tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
- Do not use anti-seize unless the plug manufacturer specifically requires it.
Step 8: Reinstall ignition coils
- Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease inside each coil boot (the rubber part) to help prevent sticking and moisture.
- Push each coil straight down until fully seated on the new plug.
- Install the coil hold-down bolt with a 7mm socket or 8mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
Step 9: Plug the coil connectors back in
- Push each connector on until it clicks/locks.
- Do a quick tug test to confirm it’s latched.
Step 10: Reinstall the engine cover
- Line up the cover grommets and press down firmly by hand.
- If fasteners were used, tighten with a 10mm socket snugly (do not over-tighten plastic).
✅ After Repair
- 🔊 Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds; it should run smooth with no shaking.
- 🛠️ If you get a check engine light or misfire, re-check that every coil connector is fully clicked in and coils are seated.
- 🧪 Take a short test drive, then recheck for any unusual smells or sounds.
