🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

Your Grand Cherokee uses six spark plugs on the 3.6L V6. This job is straightforward, but the rear bank is tighter to reach, so take your time and keep the coil packs and plug wells clean.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cool engine; hot aluminum threads can be damaged easily.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing coils.
  • Keep dirt out of the plug wells. Clean around each coil before removal.
  • Do not over-tighten spark plugs. The cylinder head threads are aluminum.
  • If your engine has a misfire or flashing check engine light, diagnose that first before replacing plugs.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 5/8-inch spark plug socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3-inch extension
  • 6-inch extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Trim panel tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Compressed air
  • Anti-seize compound
  • Dielectric grease
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Battery terminal wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil boots - Qty: 6
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
  • Anti-seize compound - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the engine cover by lifting it straight up.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and intake tube

  • Lift off the engine cover by hand.
  • Use a flat trim panel tool if the cover feels stuck.
  • If the intake duct blocks access, loosen the clamps with a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket and remove the tube.

Step 2: Disconnect the ignition coils

  • Use a small pick or finger pressure to release each coil connector lock.
  • Unplug all six ignition coils.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the coil retaining bolts.
  • Lift each coil straight up.
  • Keep coils in order if you plan to reuse them.

Step 3: Clean the spark plug wells

  • Use compressed air to blow dirt out of each plug well before removing the plugs.
  • This keeps debris from falling into the cylinder.

Step 4: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Use a 5/8-inch spark plug socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove each plug.
  • Turn slowly at first to avoid cross-threading.
  • If a plug feels stuck, work it gently back and forth.

Step 5: Prepare and install the new spark plugs

  • Check each new plug gap if required by the part listing.
  • Apply a very small amount of anti-seize compound only if the plug manufacturer allows it.
  • Start each plug by hand using the spark plug socket and extension.
  • Snug the plugs, then tighten with a torque wrench to 17.5 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • Start every plug by hand first.

Step 6: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Apply a small dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
  • Push each coil fully onto its spark plug.
  • Install the coil bolts with a 10mm socket and tighten to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect each coil electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Reinstall the intake tube and engine cover

  • Reinstall the intake duct and tighten the clamps with an 8mm socket or screwdriver.
  • Press the engine cover back into place.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen for smooth idle and check for misfire or check engine lights.
  • If you had a misfire code, clear it with a scan tool and confirm it does not return.
  • Take a short test drive and recheck for any warning lights.
