🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement
Your Explorer’s 2.3L turbo engine uses coil-on-plug ignition, so each spark plug is accessed by removing the ignition coil first. Replacing all four plugs restores smooth idle, easier starts, and helps prevent misfires under boost.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a cool engine only. Hot aluminum threads can be damaged easily.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils.
- Do not drop debris into the spark plug wells.
- Use care with the coil connectors. Do not pull on the wires.
- Do not over-tighten the new plugs. The cylinder head threads can strip.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool completely.
- Open the hood and remove the engine cover if equipped.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the ignition coils.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover
- If equipped, pull the engine cover straight up by hand. If it feels stuck, use a trim panel tool to lift it carefully.
- Set it aside in a safe place.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.
Step 3: Remove the ignition coils
- Unplug each coil connector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight back.
- Use an 8mm socket to remove the coil hold-down bolts.
- Twist each coil gently, then pull it straight up.
- Keep the coils in order.
Step 4: Clean the plug wells
- Use compressed air or an air blow gun to remove dirt from each spark plug well.
- This keeps debris from falling into the cylinder.
Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs
- Use a 5/8" spark plug socket, extension bar, and ratchet to loosen each plug.
- Turn slowly at first. If a plug feels tight, work it gently to avoid thread damage.
- Remove all four plugs.
Step 6: Inspect and prepare the new plugs
- Compare the new plugs to the old ones to confirm they match.
- Check the gap if needed. Do not bend the center electrode.
- Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound only if the plug manufacturer allows it.
Step 7: Install the new spark plugs
- Start each plug by hand using the spark plug socket and extension bar.
- Thread each plug in by hand several turns before using a ratchet.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten each plug to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall the ignition coils
- Add a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
- Push each coil straight down onto its spark plug.
- Install the coil bolts with the 8mm socket.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall the engine cover and reconnect battery
- Press the engine cover back into place by hand.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal with the 10mm socket.
- Tighten snugly, but do not over-tighten.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for smooth idle.
- Check for a check engine light or rough running.
- If the engine previously misfired, clear codes with a scan tool if needed.
- Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
