🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover
- Grip the cover and pull straight up to pop it off the mounting grommets.
- If it feels stuck, gently pry at a corner using a flat trim removal tool.
Step 2: Unplug and remove the ignition coil from cylinder 1
- Start on one coil at a time so nothing gets mixed up.
- Press the electrical connector lock tab and pull the connector off by hand.
- Remove the coil hold-down bolt using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Twist the coil slightly, then pull straight up to remove it.
- Don’t yank the wiring harness.
Step 3: Clean the spark plug well
- Blow out the spark plug hole using compressed air blow gun.
- Wipe around the opening with clean shop towels.
Step 4: Remove the old spark plug
- Install the 5/8" spark plug socket on a 3/8" drive extension and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Turn counterclockwise to loosen, then spin it out by hand with the ratchet.
- Lift the plug out with the socket.
Step 5: Check the new plug gap (don’t bend iridium tips)
- Use a feeler gauge set to verify the gap matches the plug spec for the turbo engine.
- Typical turbo spark plug gap is around 0.028-0.031 in (0.7-0.8 mm) depending on the exact plug supplied.
- If the plug is labeled “do not gap,” install as-is.
- Never pry on the tiny center tip.
Step 6: Install the new spark plug by hand, then torque it
- Place the new plug into the 5/8" spark plug socket and lower it into the hole.
- Thread it in by hand using only the extension (no ratchet at first) to avoid cross-threading.
- Once hand-tight, torque the plug using a torque wrench: Torque to 18-22 Nm (13-16 ft-lbs).
- If it doesn’t thread smoothly, stop and restart.
Step 7: Reinstall the ignition coil
- Apply a very small dab of dielectric grease inside the end of the coil boot.
- Push the coil straight down until it fully seats on the spark plug.
- Install the coil bolt with a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet: Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 8: Repeat for the remaining cylinders
- Repeat Steps 2 through 7 for each of the other 3 coils and plugs.
- Keep everything clean and do one cylinder at a time.
Step 9: Reinstall the engine cover and reconnect the battery
- Press the engine cover down until it snaps into place.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.

- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds. It should run smooth with no shaking.
- Take a short test drive and do a gentle acceleration pull; watch for a blinking check engine light (misfire).
- If you get a misfire, re-check that each coil connector is fully clicked in and each coil is fully seated.
