🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

Your RAV4 uses coil-on-plug ignition, so each spark plug sits under an ignition coil. This job is straightforward, but careful handling matters because the plugs thread into aluminum cylinder heads and can be damaged if cross-threaded.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a completely cool engine to prevent burns and thread damage.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal before removing ignition coils.
  • Do not use anti-seize on the new plugs unless the plug manufacturer specifically requires it.
  • Use care when tightening plugs into the aluminum cylinder head. Cross-threading can cause major engine damage.
  • Keep dirt and debris out of the spark plug wells.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 6-inch extension
  • 14mm spark plug socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat blade trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Dielectric grease
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs, iridium type - Qty: 4
  • Valve cover gasket set - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.
  • Keep the plug wells clean.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Lift the engine cover straight up and off by hand.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently to release the rubber mounts.

Step 2: Remove the air intake tube if needed

  • Use a flat blade trim tool or your hands to loosen any clips or resonator connections blocking access.
  • Move the intake tube aside for better access to the ignition coils.

Step 3: Disconnect the ignition coils

  • Use a flat blade trim tool to release the electrical connector locks if needed.
  • Unplug each coil connector carefully.
  • Remove the coil hold-down bolts with a 10mm socket.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coils

  • Pull each coil straight up by hand.
  • If a coil sticks, twist gently while lifting.
  • Do not pry hard on the coil body.

Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Use a 14mm spark plug socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove each plug.
  • Turn counterclockwise and remove each plug slowly.
  • Inspect the old plugs for oil, heavy deposits, or unusual wear.

Step 6: Install the new spark plugs

  • Check that each new plug gap matches factory spec if the plugs are not pre-gapped.
  • Thread each plug in by hand first using the 14mm spark plug socket and extension.
  • Once seated by hand, tighten with a torque wrench to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start every plug first.

Step 7: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
  • Push each coil straight down onto its plug.
  • Install the coil bolts with a 10mm socket and tighten to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect each electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall intake parts and engine cover

  • Reinstall any intake parts removed earlier.
  • Press the engine cover back onto its mounts by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check for smooth idle, misfires, or warning lights.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
  • If the check engine light comes on, scan for ignition-related codes.
