🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

Your Rogue uses coil-on-plug ignition, so each spark plug is hidden under an ignition coil. The job is mostly removing the engine cover, intake ducting, and coil packs so you can swap the plugs one at a time. Work on a cool engine.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before starting. Hot aluminum threads can be damaged easily.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want extra safety around the ignition system.
  • Do not drop dirt into the spark plug wells.
  • Use care with the ignition coils. Pull straight up and do not twist hard.
  • Use the correct spark plug socket only. A rubber insert or magnetic socket helps hold the plug.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3-inch extension
  • 6-inch extension
  • 5/8-inch spark plug socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Shop vacuum
  • Dielectric grease
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plug set - Qty: 4

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool down fully.
  • Open the hood and remove any loose items from the engine bay.
  • If the battery is disconnected, you may lose radio presets.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover

  • Use your hands to lift the engine cover straight up and off.
  • Set it aside carefully.

Step 2: Remove the intake tube

  • Use a flat trim tool or 10mm socket as needed to loosen the intake duct clamps and fasteners.
  • Disconnect the intake tube from the air box and throttle body.
  • Move the duct out of the way.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coil connectors

  • Press the tab on each coil connector and unplug it by hand.
  • If a connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the release tab area, not the wires.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coils

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolts.
  • Pull each ignition coil straight up.
  • Keep coils in order if reusing them.

Step 5: Clean the plug wells

  • Use a shop vacuum to remove any dirt from around each plug well.
  • This keeps debris out of the cylinder head.

Step 6: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Use a 5/8-inch spark plug socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove each spark plug.
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen.
  • Lift each plug out carefully.

Step 7: Install the new spark plugs

  • Check the new plugs for damage and verify the gap if needed. Do not force the gap open too much on precious-metal plugs.
  • Install each plug by hand first using the 5/8-inch spark plug socket and extension.
  • Thread them in gently to avoid cross-threading.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
  • Push each coil straight onto its spark plug.
  • Install the coil bolts with the 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect each coil electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the intake tube and engine cover

  • Reinstall the intake duct and tighten the clamps with the 10mm socket or by hand if equipped with worm clamps.
  • Make sure all hoses and clamps are seated correctly.
  • Press the engine cover back into place.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen for smooth operation and check for misfire or warning lights.
  • If the check engine light comes on, scan for ignition-related codes.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
