🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement
Your Accord uses a V6 layout with the rear bank tucked under the intake area, so this job takes a little more time than a simple inline engine. The main work is removing the upper intake components, swapping all six plugs, then reassembling everything carefully so there are no vacuum leaks.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a completely cool engine. Hot aluminum threads can be damaged easily.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing intake parts.
- Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells. Debris can fall into the cylinders.
- Use care around ignition coils. Do not pry on the connectors.
- Do not over-tighten spark plugs. The cylinder head threads can be damaged.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting
- Lift off the engine cover by hand.
- Use an 8mm socket and flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the air intake tube clamps.
- Remove the intake duct and air box inlet pieces as needed for access.
Step 3: Remove the throttle body and intake components
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet with extension to remove the throttle body bolts.
- Unplug the throttle body connector carefully.
- If coolant hoses are attached, clamp them or drain a small amount of coolant first if needed.
- Remove the upper intake manifold fasteners using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket as needed.
- Lift the intake manifold off the engine.
- Keep rags in the intake ports.
Step 4: Access and remove the ignition coils
- Unplug each ignition coil connector one at a time.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the coil hold-down bolts.
- Twist each coil gently and pull it straight out.
Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs
- Use a 5/8-inch spark plug socket, extension, and ratchet to remove each spark plug.
- Remove one plug at a time so you do not mix anything up.
- Check the old plugs for heavy oil, white deposits, or broken electrodes.
Step 6: Install the new spark plugs
- Make sure each plug gap is correct if the plugs are not pre-gapped.
- Start each plug by hand using the 5/8-inch spark plug socket and extension.
- Torque each spark plug to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
- Hand-start every plug first.
Step 7: Reinstall the ignition coils
- Add a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
- Push each coil straight onto its spark plug.
- Install the coil bolts with a 10mm socket.
- Torque the coil bolts to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect all coil connectors.
Step 8: Reinstall the intake manifold and throttle body
- Remove the rags from the intake ports.
- Install the new upper intake manifold gasket.
- Set the intake manifold back in place by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to tighten the manifold bolts evenly.
- Torque the intake manifold fasteners to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
- Install the throttle body with the new gasket.
- Torque the throttle body bolts to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the air intake parts and battery
- Reconnect the intake tube and tighten the clamps with an 8mm socket or screwdriver.
- Reinstall the engine cover.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
Step 10: Start and verify
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Listen for vacuum leaks or misfires.
- Check that the idle is smooth and no warning lights appear.
✅ After Repair
- Test drive the vehicle for 10-15 minutes.
- Recheck for loose hoses, connectors, or warning lights.
- If the check engine light was on before, clear codes and confirm they do not return.
- If idle is rough, recheck coil connectors and intake gasket seating.
