🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

The Equinox uses a V6 with six individual ignition coils, one per spark plug. This job is straightforward on the front bank and tighter on the rear bank, so take your time and work one cylinder at a time to avoid mixing parts. Fresh plugs help restore smooth idle, fuel economy, and hard-start complaints.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cool engine. Hot aluminum cylinder heads can be damaged if plugs are removed warm.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the plug tubes or cylinder head openings.
  • Use care with the rear bank near the firewall; hand and tool clearance is tight.
  • Do not over-tighten plugs. Aluminum heads strip easily.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3-inch extension
  • 6-inch extension
  • Spark plug socket 5/8-inch with rubber insert
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Shop vacuum
  • Compressed air nozzle
  • Anti-seize compound
  • Dielectric grease
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Fender cover

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs, iridium type - Qty: 6
  • Ignition coil boot grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching coil connectors.
  • Open the hood and remove the engine cover if equipped.
  • Label coils if you want extra peace of mind.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting

  • Use your hands to lift off the engine cover if equipped.
  • Use an 8mm socket to loosen the air inlet duct clamps if the duct blocks access.
  • Remove any breather or resonator hoses connected to the duct.
  • Set all clips aside carefully.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back to the post.

Step 3: Remove ignition coils

  • Unplug one ignition coil connector at a time.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the ignition coil bolt.
  • Twist the coil gently and pull it straight out.
  • Repeat for all six coils.
  • Torque on reassembly: 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)

Step 4: Clean the plug wells

  • Use compressed air or a shop vacuum to remove dirt from each spark plug tube.
  • Keep debris out of the cylinder head opening.
  • Clean first, then remove plugs.

Step 5: Remove the spark plugs

  • Use a 5/8-inch spark plug socket with an extension to loosen each plug counterclockwise.
  • Remove one plug at a time so you can compare wear if needed.
  • If a plug feels stuck, work it gently back and forth with the ratchet.

Step 6: Install the new spark plugs

  • Check the new plug gaps if the part is not pre-gapped.
  • Thread each plug in by hand using the 5/8-inch spark plug socket and extension.
  • Once seated, tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs)
  • Do not use power tools on spark plugs.

Step 7: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
  • Push each coil straight onto its spark plug until fully seated.
  • Install the coil bolt with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
  • Reconnect each coil electrical connector.

Step 8: Reassemble the intake parts

  • Reinstall any intake ducting, hoses, and clamps using the 8mm socket.
  • Reinstall the engine cover.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen for misfires, rough idle, or ticking.
  • Check that all connectors and hoses are fully seated.
  • If the check engine light was on before, clear codes and verify no misfire codes return.
  • Recheck plug and coil connections after a short test drive.
