🔧 Patriot - Spark Plug Replacement
Replacing the spark plugs restores smooth starting, idle, and fuel economy. On your Patriot’s 2.0L engine, the plugs sit in deep holes in the cylinder head, so the key is keeping dirt out and tightening the new plugs to the correct torque.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧯 Work on a fully cool engine to avoid burns and stripped threads.
- 🧤 Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes; grit can damage the engine.
- 🔋 Optional but recommended: disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical shorting.
- đź‘“ Wear safety glasses when using compressed air.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3/8" ratchet
- 3/8" torque wrench (10-30 ft-lbs range)
- 5/8" spark plug socket
- 3/8" extension set (3" and 6")
- Compressed air blow gun
- Feeler gauge set (includes 0.043")
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Permanent marker
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Spark plugs (OEM equivalent, correct heat range) - Qty: 4
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
- Ignition wire set - Qty: 1 (optional if wires are cracked/swollen)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, transmission in neutral, parking brake set.
- Let the engine cool completely (at least 1 hour after driving).
- If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative cable and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
- Use a permanent marker to label ignition wires by cylinder number so they go back to the same plug.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)
- Remove any retaining fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (some covers pull off with rubber grommets).
- Lift the cover off and set it aside.
Step 2: Identify your ignition style (two common setups)
- Setup A (most common): one ignition coil pack with 4 spark plug wires running to the plugs.
- Setup B: coil-on-plug (one coil sitting directly on each plug) with an electrical connector at each coil.
- Do not mix up wire/coil locations.
Step 3A: If you have spark plug wires, remove them
- Label each wire with a permanent marker (example: 1-2-3-4).
- Grip the boot (the thick rubber end) and twist slightly, then pull straight up.
- If stuck, gently help the boot with a small flathead screwdriver (don’t pierce the rubber).
- Never pull on the wire itself.
Step 3B: If you have coil-on-plug coils, remove the coils
- Unplug each coil connector by releasing the lock tab using a small flathead screwdriver.
- Remove the coil retaining bolt(s) using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- Pull the coil straight up and out.
Step 4: Clean around each spark plug hole
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow debris away from each plug well (the deep hole where the plug sits).
- Keep your face back and wear safety glasses.
Step 5: Remove the old spark plugs
- Install a 5/8" spark plug socket on a 3/8" extension and 3/8" ratchet.
- Turn counterclockwise to loosen, then remove the plug fully.
- Repeat for all four cylinders.
Step 6: Check and set the gap on the new plugs (if required)
- Use a feeler gauge set to verify the gap is 0.043 in (1.1 mm).
- If your plugs are “pre-gapped,” still verify—shipping can change it.
- Never pry on an iridium tip.
Step 7: Install the new spark plugs (start by hand)
- Place a new plug into the 5/8" spark plug socket and lower it into the hole using a 3/8" extension.
- Thread the plug in by hand first (use just the extension held by hand) to avoid cross-threading.
- Once finger-tight, switch to a 3/8" torque wrench and tighten to Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Do not use anti-seize unless the plug maker specifically requires it.
Step 8A: Reinstall spark plug wires (if equipped)
- Put a small dab of dielectric grease inside each boot (dielectric grease helps prevent moisture/corrosion).
- Push each boot straight down until you feel it click/seat on the plug.
- Route wires exactly as they were, away from hot/moving parts.
Step 8B: Reinstall coil-on-plug coils (if equipped)
- Apply a small dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot.
- Push the coil straight down until fully seated.
- Install the coil bolt(s) using a 10mm socket and snug them evenly.
- Reconnect the electrical connector(s) until they click.
Step 9: Reinstall the engine cover and reconnect the battery (if removed)
- Reinstall the engine cover fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- If disconnected, reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and tighten securely.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds. It should idle smooth.
- Listen for a steady rhythm (no popping/sputtering). If it runs rough, re-check wire/coil seating.
- Take a short test drive, then re-check that no wires are touching hot components.
