🔧 Spark Plugs - Replacement

Your Tacoma uses coil-on-plug ignition, so each plug is reached by removing the ignition coils one at a time. This is a straightforward service, but clean work matters because debris falling into the plug wells can cause misfires or engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before starting. Hot aluminum cylinder heads can damage threads.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils. This reduces the chance of accidental starting and spark.
  • Work one cylinder at a time so nothing gets mixed up.
  • Do not blow dirt into the spark plug holes. Clean around each coil before removal.
  • Use a spark plug socket and torque wrench. Over-tightening can strip the threads in the cylinder head.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 16mm spark plug socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3-inch extension
  • 6-inch extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Compressed air or hand blower
  • Dielectric grease
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Spark plugs - Qty: 6

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the engine is stone cold.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging coils.
  • Keep dirt and sand away from the spark plug wells.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power and clear access

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Remove the engine cover if equipped.
  • If any intake tube blocks access, loosen the clamp with a flat screwdriver and move it aside.

Step 2: Remove the ignition coils

  • Work on one coil at a time so the parts stay organized.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove each coil hold-down bolt.
  • Unplug the electrical connector on each coil.
  • Twist the coil gently and pull it straight up.
  • Do not pry hard on the coil.

Step 3: Clean the plug wells

  • Use compressed air or a hand blower to remove dirt from around each spark plug well.
  • This helps keep debris out of the cylinder when the plug is removed.

Step 4: Remove the old spark plugs

  • Use a 16mm spark plug socket, 3-inch extension, and ratchet to loosen each plug.
  • Turn each plug counterclockwise until it comes out.
  • If a plug feels tight, work it back and forth gently instead of forcing it.

Step 5: Install the new spark plugs

  • Check the new plugs for damage before installation.
  • Thread each plug in by hand first using the spark plug socket and extension.
  • Once seated, tighten with a torque wrench to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start every plug first.

Step 6: Reinstall the ignition coils

  • Add a small amount of dielectric grease inside each coil boot if desired.
  • Push each coil straight down onto its spark plug.
  • Reconnect each electrical connector.
  • Install the coil hold-down bolts with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reassemble and reconnect power

  • Reinstall any intake parts removed earlier using the flat screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the engine cover if equipped.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle smoothly.
  • Listen for misfires, rough idle, or ticking sounds.
  • If the check engine light is on, scan for misfire codes.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
