How to Replace Spark Plugs on a 1988-2008 Toyota Corolla (Step-by-Step DIY Guide) (Engine: Inline 4 1.8L | Body: Sedan)
Tools, spark plug gap, torque specs, safety tips, and coil removal/install instructions for 1988, 1989
🔧 Corolla - Spark Plug Replacement
Replacing the spark plugs keeps your Corolla starting easily, idling smoothly, and getting good fuel economy. On your engine, the plugs sit deep in the cylinder head under the ignition coils, so the job is mostly careful removal and proper torque on install.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a fully cool engine to avoid burns and damaged threads.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the spark plug holes; debris can damage the engine.
- ⚠️ Do not over-tighten spark plugs; the cylinder head is aluminum.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the key out of the ignition while unplugging coils.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 3/8" drive extension set (3" and 6")
- 5/8" spark plug socket (rubber insert)
- Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10-30 ft-lb range)
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Compressed air blow gun
- Feeler gauge set (metric)
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Spark plugs (iridium, correct fit for your Corolla) - Qty: 4
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool completely (at least 1 hour after driving).
- Lay out the new plugs and keep them clean.
- Do one coil and plug at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the engine cover fasteners.
- Lift the cover off and set it aside.
Step 2: Unplug the first ignition coil
- Locate the ignition coil on top of the engine (one per cylinder).
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently release the connector lock tab (don’t pry hard).
- Pull the connector straight off.
- An ignition coil makes the spark for that cylinder.
Step 3: Remove the ignition coil
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolt.
- Pull the coil straight up and out. If it’s stuck, gently twist while pulling.
- Set the coil aside where it stays clean and dry.
Step 4: Blow out the spark plug well
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt out of the spark plug tube before removing the plug.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the well is clean.
Step 5: Remove the old spark plug
- Install a 5/8" spark plug socket (rubber insert) on a 3/8" drive extension (6") and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Lower the socket straight down onto the plug and loosen it counterclockwise.
- Once loose, spin it out gently and lift it out with the socket.
Step 6: Check the new spark plug gap (do not bend iridium tips)
- Use a feeler gauge set (metric) to verify the plug gap is about 1.1 mm (0.044 in).
- If the plug is iridium (common on your Corolla), do not try to “re-gap” by prying on the tiny center tip.
Step 7: Install the new spark plug (by hand first)
- Place the new plug into the 5/8" spark plug socket (rubber insert) and carefully lower it into the hole.
- Use only the 3/8" drive extension (6") to start threading the plug by hand (no ratchet yet).
- If it doesn’t thread smoothly, back it out and try again to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lb).
- Hand-threading prevents expensive thread damage.
Step 8: Reinstall the ignition coil
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the coil boot (the rubber end). Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent moisture and sticking.
- Push the coil straight down onto the new plug until it seats.
- Install the coil bolt using a 10mm socket and then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lb).
- Reconnect the coil electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 9: Repeat for the other 3 cylinders
- Repeat Steps 2 through 8 for each remaining cylinder.
- Use the flashlight to double-check every connector is fully seated.
Step 10: Reinstall the engine cover (if equipped)
- Reinstall the cover fasteners using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Snug them down (do not over-tighten plastic covers).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Listen for smooth idle; no shaking or “puffing” sounds.
- If the check engine light comes on or it runs rough, re-check each coil connector and coil seating.
- Take a short test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
