šŸ”§ Grand Cherokee - Side View Mirror Replacement

On your Grand Cherokee, the side mirror is bolted to the door from the inside and connected with an electrical plug for features like power adjust, heat, turn signal, and blind-spot. The job is mostly careful trim removal so you don’t break clips or scratch paint.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (per side)

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the battery before unplugging door wiring; the door contains airbag-related wiring.
  • āš ļø After disconnecting the battery, wait at least 2 minutes before working in the door.
  • āš ļø Support the mirror with your hand while removing nuts so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
  • āš ļø Use plastic trim tools; metal tools can damage the door panel and clips.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or low Nm)
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Torx T30 screwdriver
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Pick tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Painters tape
  • Magnetic parts tray
  • Battery terminal wrench (10mm)
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (correct side) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel retainer clips - Qty: 5-10
  • Foam mirror gasket (if not included with mirror) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition off.
  • Lower the window on the side you’re working on (it helps with handling the door panel).
  • Apply painters tape around the mirror base area on the outside of the door to protect the paint.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench, then wait at least 2 minutes.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the mirror features (important)

  • Look at the old mirror: does it have a turn-signal strip in the glass, a puddle light under it, or Blind Spot Monitoring?
  • If the new mirror connector doesn’t match the old one, stop and re-check you have the correct mirror for your Grand Cherokee.
  • Match plug shape and pin count.

Step 2: Remove the interior ā€œsail panelā€ trim

  • At the top-front corner of the door (inside), pry off the small triangular trim using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • If your sail panel has a tweeter speaker, unplug it using a pick tool to lift the locking tab, then pull the connector straight off.

Step 3: Remove the door trim panel fasteners

  • Remove the screw(s) behind the interior door handle area using a Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Remove any screw(s) in the armrest/pull handle pocket using a Torx T30 screwdriver.
  • If equipped, remove any lower door panel screw(s) using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Place all screws in a magnetic parts tray.

Step 4: Release the door panel clips and lift the panel off

  • Starting at the bottom edge, pop the door panel clips out using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • Once the clips are free, lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the top window channel.
  • Support the panel close to the door so you don’t strain the wiring.

Step 5: Disconnect door panel electrical connectors

  • Unplug the window/lock switch connector(s) by pressing the tab and pulling straight out (use a pick tool if the tab is stubborn).
  • If present, disconnect the courtesy light connector at the bottom of the panel.
  • Set the door panel somewhere safe, face-up.

Step 6: Peel back the water shield enough to access the mirror area

  • Carefully peel the plastic water shield back near the mirror mounting area by hand.
  • If the sticky butyl (black glue) strings, use mechanic gloves and go slowly so you can re-seal it later.

Step 7: Disconnect the mirror wiring connector

  • Find the mirror connector inside the door near the mirror base.
  • Press the locking tab and unplug it; use a pick tool to gently lift the lock if needed.

Step 8: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Hold the mirror from the outside with one hand.
  • Remove the mirror nuts using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Remove the mirror from the outside and feed the wiring through the door opening.

Step 9: Install the new mirror

  • Make sure the foam gasket is in place on the new mirror base (or transfer it if required).
  • Feed the wiring through the door opening and set the mirror onto the door studs.
  • Install the nuts finger-tight, then tighten evenly using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten using a torque wrench: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect wiring and re-seal the water shield

  • Plug in the mirror connector until it clicks.
  • Press the water shield back into the butyl adhesive all the way around the area you peeled back.

Step 11: Reinstall the door panel

  • Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors (switches, lights).
  • Hang the door panel on the top window ledge and slide it down into place.
  • Press around the edges to snap all clips back in.
  • Reinstall the screws using the Torx T20 screwdriver, Torx T30 screwdriver, and/or Phillips #2 screwdriver (same locations as removed).

Step 12: Reinstall the sail panel

  • If equipped, reconnect the tweeter connector.
  • Snap the sail panel back on using hand pressure.

Step 13: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn ignition on and test mirror adjust in all directions.
  • If equipped, test mirror heat (may take a minute), turn signal indicator, puddle lamp, and Blind Spot Monitoring indicator.
  • Check the mirror sits flush and doesn’t wobble while closing the door.
  • If any door panel clips didn’t hold, replace broken clips and re-seat the panel.
