šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the interior sail panel (mirror trim)
- At the front upper corner of the door (inside), pry off the small triangular trim piece using a trim removal tool set.
- Pull straight out to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove screws holding the door trim panel
- Remove any visible screws near the armrest/handle area using a Phillips screwdriver (some vans use a 7mm socket instead).
- If thereās a small cover hiding a screw, pop the cover off gently with a flat-blade screwdriver, then remove the screw.
- Put screws in one cup so you donāt lose them.
Step 3: Release the door trim panel clips
- Slide a trim removal tool set between the panel and the metal door and pop the clips loose around the edges.
- A ātrim removal toolā is a plastic pry tool that helps you pop clips without damaging the panel.
Step 4: Lift the door trim panel off
- Lift the whole panel upward to unhook it from the top edge of the door.
- Disconnect any electrical connectors (window/lock switch) by pressing the tab and pulling apart by hand.
- Use a flashlight to see connector tabs clearly.
Step 5: Peel back the water shield (vapor barrier)
- Carefully peel back the plastic water shield near the mirror area.
- If the sticky sealer comes off messy, use butyl tape later to reseal it.
- Donāt tear it; it prevents water leaks.
Step 6: Unplug the mirror connector (if equipped)
- Find the mirror wiring connector inside the door near the mirror mounting area.
- Press the lock tab and unplug it by hand.
- If the connector is hard to reach, use a flashlight and gently guide it free.
Step 7: Remove the mirror mounting nuts
- Hold the mirror on the outside with one hand so it canāt drop.
- Remove the 3 mounting nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
- If a nut falls into the door, retrieve it with a magnetic pickup tool.
Step 8: Remove the mirror assembly
- Pull the mirror away from the door and guide the wiring through the hole (if equipped).
- Inspect the mounting surface and clean off dirt or old sealer by hand.
Step 9: Install the new mirror
- Feed the wiring through the door opening (if equipped) and seat the mirror on the studs.
- Thread the nuts on by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
- Tighten the nuts evenly using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) using an inch-pound torque wrench (specialty).
- An āinch-pound torque wrenchā measures small fastener tightness accurately so you donāt crack plastic or strip studs.
Step 10: Reconnect wiring and reseal the water shield
- Plug the mirror connector back in by hand until it clicks.
- Press the water shield back into place; add butyl tape if it wonāt stick.
Step 11: Reinstall the door trim panel
- Reconnect door switch connectors by hand.
- Hook the panel over the top edge of the door and press it down into place.
- Press around the edges to snap all clips in.
- Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver or 7mm socket (whichever you removed).
Step 12: Reinstall the sail panel
- Line it up and press it straight in until the clips snap in place.
- Remove the painterās tape from the door.
ā After Repair
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative cable using a 10mm socket.
- Turn the key on and test mirror functions: adjust up/down/left/right, heat (if equipped), and any turn signal indicator (if equipped).
- Check that the window and door locks work before fully closing up tools.
- Take a short drive and confirm the mirror is stable and vibration-free.
