How to Replace Side View Mirrors on a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox
Step-by-step DIY mirror replacement with tools, parts list, safety tips, and torque specs

🔧 Equinox - Side View Mirror Replacement
You’ll be removing the interior door trim at the mirror area, unplugging the mirror wiring, then unbolting and swapping the mirror on your Equinox. This is mostly careful panel removal and simple bolts, but working gently is important so clips and glass don’t crack.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1–1.5 hours per side
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep the ignition OFF while unplugging mirror wiring to avoid electrical shorts.
- ⚠️ Always support the mirror with one hand when removing the last mounting nut so it doesn’t fall and chip the paint.
- ⚠️ Use plastic trim tools, not screwdrivers, on interior panels to avoid breaking clips or scratching trim.
- ⚠️ If your mirror is heated or has turn signal/BLIS indicators, disconnect the negative battery cable to be extra safe.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses; small clips and glass can snap unexpectedly.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🧰 Park the Equinox on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition OFF.
- 🧰 Close all windows and unlock the doors so you can work on the interior panels.
- 🧰 If your mirror has turn signals, blind-spot indicators, or auto-dimming, disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- 🧰 Protect the paint around the mirror and top of the door with masking tape or a clean rag.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm your mirror style
- 🔧 Look at the existing mirror: note if it has a turn signal in the housing, heating icon on the glass, or blind-spot indicator light. This helps you match the new part.
- 🔧 Check the connector on the new mirror to be sure it matches the plug inside your door before you start.
Step 2: Prepare the door and work area
- 🔧 Lower the window slightly so you can grip the glass frame if needed.
- 🔧 Turn the front wheel away from the side you are working on so you have more room to move around, but keep the ignition OFF while actually working.
- 🔧 Put on your mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
Step 3: Remove the small interior mirror trim cover
- 🔧 This is the small triangular plastic piece on the inside of the door, at the front corner of the glass, covering the mirror base.
- 🔧 Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry at the top edge of the cover.
- 🔧 Work around the edges using the plastic trim removal tool until the clips pop free. Pull straight, not twisted.
- 🔧 If it feels stuck, insert a flathead screwdriver wrapped with a rag to protect the plastic, and gently twist; then continue with the plastic tool.
Step 4: Disconnect the mirror electrical connector
- 🔧 Behind that trim, you will see the mirror electrical connector coming through the door.
- 🔧 Press the locking tab on the connector with your thumb or use needle-nose pliers gently if it’s tight.
- 🔧 Pull the connector halves apart by hand; do not pull on the wires.
Step 5: Remove mirror mounting nuts
- 🔧 You will see three mirror mounting studs or bolts coming through the door sheet metal.
- 🔧 Put one hand on the outside mirror to support it.
- 🔧 Use a 10mm socket with 1/4" ratchet and extension to remove the three nuts holding the mirror.
- 🔧 Leave the top nut for last and keep one hand on the mirror so it doesn’t fall.
- 🔧 Factory spec is low; when reinstalling, torque to 9–11 Nm (80–97 in-lbs) using your torque wrench.
Step 6: Remove the old mirror from the door
- 🔧 With all nuts off, carefully pull the mirror outward from the door.
- 🔧 Feed the mirror wiring and connector out through the hole in the door as you remove it.
- 🔧 Set the old mirror aside in a safe place in case you need hardware.
Step 7: Prepare the mounting surface
- 🔧 Inspect the foam gasket or seal where the mirror meets the door; remove any loose pieces using your plastic trim removal tool.
- 🔧 Wipe the painted surface clean with a clean rag so the new mirror sits flat.
- 🔧 If your new mirror does not include a foam gasket, install the new mirror-to-door foam seal now.
Step 8: Install the new mirror
- 🔧 Hold the new mirror next to the door and feed the wiring and connector through the same hole in the door.
- 🔧 Align the three studs or bolts of the new mirror with the holes in the door from the outside.
- 🔧 While holding the mirror in place with one hand, start one of the 10mm nuts by hand from the inside so the mirror can hang on its own.
- 🔧 Start the other two nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- 🔧 Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to snug them evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- 🔧 Final tighten each nut with the torque wrench to 9–11 Nm (80–97 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the electrical connector
- 🔧 Plug the door-side connector into the new mirror connector until it clicks.
- 🔧 Give it a gentle tug to be sure it is locked.
- 🔧 Tuck any extra wire neatly so it does not pinch under the trim piece.
Step 10: Reinstall the interior mirror trim cover
- 🔧 Line up the plastic tabs on the trim cover with the holes in the door frame.
- 🔧 Press the cover into place by hand until all clips click in.
- 🔧 If a clip is bent or broken, remove it with needle-nose pliers and install a new door panel push clip before refitting.
Step 11: If you had to move the door panel (less common)
- 🔧 On some Equinox builds the mirror connector is slightly lower, but usually you do not need to fully remove the door panel. If you did loosen it:
- 🔧 Remove any visible screws using the Torx T20 screwdriver or Phillips #2 screwdriver (under the door pull handle trim and at the bottom edge), then lift the panel up and out, unplug switch connectors, and set aside.
- 🔧 Reinstall is reverse: hang the panel on the window ledge, reconnect switches, press clips in using your hands, and reinstall screws with the correct screwdriver.
- 🔧 Use the panel clip removal tool if any clips stayed in the door; move them back to the panel before reinstallation.
Step 12: Repeat on the other side (if replacing both)
- 🔧 Follow the same steps for the opposite side mirror.
- 🔧 Do one side fully before starting the other to avoid mixing screws or clips.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative cable with a 10mm socket and tighten snugly.
- ✅ Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and test mirror power adjustment in all directions.
- ✅ Test mirror heating by turning on the rear defogger (if equipped with heated mirrors); after a few minutes, the mirror glass should feel warm.
- ✅ If your mirrors have turn signals or blind-spot lights, activate turn signals and check both sides for proper operation.
- ✅ Take a short drive and adjust both mirrors so you can just see the side of your Equinox at the inner edge of the mirror view.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
