🔧 Tacoma - Side View Mirror Replacement
Replacing a side view mirror on your Tacoma involves removing the interior door trim, unplugging the mirror connector, unbolting the mirror, and installing the new one. This is a good beginner-friendly repair if you work slowly and protect the door panel clips.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-90 minutes per side
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park your Tacoma on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging mirror wiring to avoid accidental short circuits.
- ⚠️ Door trim clips can break if pulled at an angle. Use a trim tool and pull straight outward.
- ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand while removing the last nut so it does not fall and scratch the paint.
- ⚠️ If the replacement mirror is painted, protect the door edge with painter’s tape before removal.

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Side view mirror assembly - Qty: 1 per side
- Door trim panel clips - Qty: As needed
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Open the door fully and make sure you have room to work beside your Tacoma.
- 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable, then move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
- 🧰 A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps pop panels loose without scratching the interior.
- 🧲 Keep the mirror nuts in a small tray. They are easy to drop inside the door.
- 🪞 If replacing both mirrors, complete one side first so you can use the other side as a reference.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Protect the Door Paint
- Use painter’s tape 1-inch around the outside edge of the mirror base where it meets the door.
- This helps prevent scratches if the mirror shifts during removal.
- Take your time here.
Step 2: Remove the Interior Sail Trim
- The sail trim is the small triangular plastic cover inside the door, directly behind the mirror.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pry the triangular sail trim away from the door.
- Pull straight outward. Do not twist hard, because the plastic retaining clips can crack.
Step 3: Remove Door Handle Trim Screws
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully open the small screw covers in the inside door pull and handle area.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the exposed screws from the door trim panel.
- Place the screws in a safe container.
Step 4: Remove the Door Trim Panel
- Use a plastic trim removal tool set at the lower edge of the door panel.
- Pry outward gently until the first clip pops loose.
- Work around the sides and bottom of the panel with the trim tool until all clips are loose.
- Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Do not pull the panel far away yet because wiring and cables may still be attached.
Step 5: Disconnect Door Panel Wiring
- Use your fingers or a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the locking tabs on the power window and lock connectors.
- Unplug the connectors and set the door panel on a clean, soft surface.
- If a connector feels stuck, press the tab harder rather than pulling on the wires.
Step 6: Unplug the Mirror Connector
- Locate the mirror wiring connector inside the upper front area of the door.
- Use your fingers or a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector lock tab.
- Unplug the mirror connector from the door harness.
- If your replacement mirror is manual and has no connector, skip this unplugging step.
Step 7: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts
- Support the outside mirror with one hand.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension 3/8-inch drive, and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the mirror mounting nuts.
- Use a magnetic pickup tool if a nut starts to fall inside the door.
- Keep holding the mirror while removing the last nut.
Step 8: Remove the Old Mirror
- From the outside of the door, gently pull the mirror straight away from the door.
- Feed the wiring connector through the opening if your mirror is powered.
- Clean the mounting surface with a soft cloth before installing the new mirror.
Step 9: Install the New Mirror
- Feed the new mirror wiring through the door opening, if equipped.
- Position the mirror studs through the door holes.
- Start all mounting nuts by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by forcing the nut on crooked.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to snug the nuts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive with 10mm socket to tighten the mirror mounting nuts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the Mirror Wiring
- Use your hands to plug the mirror connector into the door harness until it clicks.
- Make sure the wiring is routed away from the window track and door panel clips.
- Listen for the click.
Step 11: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel
- Reconnect the power window and lock connectors by hand.
- Hook the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
- Line up the clips with their holes.
- Press around the panel edges by hand until each clip snaps into place.
Step 12: Reinstall Screws and Trim Covers
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the door panel screws.
- If any bolts are present at the door pull area, use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket as fitted.
- Snap the small screw covers back into place by hand.
Step 13: Reinstall the Sail Trim
- Line up the triangular sail trim clips with the holes in the door.
- Press the trim straight inward by hand until it snaps into place.
- Do not hit the trim with a tool.
Step 14: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the terminal snugly. Do not overtighten it.
- Close the door gently and check that the panel sits flat.
✅ After Repair
