📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Escape on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. A negative battery cable is the black cable marked “-”.
- 🪟 Lower the window on the door you are working on. This gives you a safe handhold and better access.
- 🧼 Apply painter’s tape around the mirror base on the outside of the door to protect the paint.
- 💡 If the replacement mirror is paint-to-match, have it painted before installation.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle to loosen the negative battery cable clamp.
- Lift the cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot touch the post.
- Take a photo before unplugging connectors.
Step 2: Remove the Interior Mirror Trim Cover
- Open the front door fully.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry off the small triangular trim cover at the inside corner of the mirror.
- A trim tool is a soft plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without scratching them.
- Set the cover aside on a shop towel.
Step 3: Remove Hidden Door Panel Covers
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift the small screw cover behind the inside door handle.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the cover inside the door pull handle area.
- Wrap the screwdriver tip with a shop towel if needed to reduce scratches.
Step 4: Remove Door Panel Screws
- Use a 7mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet handle to remove the door panel screws.
- Common screw locations are behind the inside handle cover, inside the pull handle pocket, and along the lower edge of the door panel.
- Place all screws in a small cup or on a towel so none get lost.
Step 5: Release the Door Panel Clips
- Start at the lower rear edge of the door panel.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pry between the door panel and metal door shell.
- Pull outward gently until the clips pop loose.
- Work around the bottom and sides of the panel one clip at a time.
- A door clip is a small plastic fastener that snaps the panel to the metal door.
- Slow pressure breaks fewer clips.
Step 6: Lift the Door Panel Up and Away
- Use both hands to lift the door panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Do not pull the panel far away yet because wiring and cables are still attached.
- Rest the panel close to the door while you disconnect the connectors.
Step 7: Disconnect Door Panel Wiring and Cable
- Use your fingers or a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the locking tabs on the window switch and door lock connectors.
- Pull the connectors straight out. Do not pull on the wires.
- If needed, use needle-nose pliers to carefully release the inside handle cable retainer.
- Set the door panel on a shop towel in a safe place.
Step 8: Disconnect the Mirror Wiring Connector
- Find the mirror wiring connector near the upper front inside area of the door.
- Use your fingers or a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector lock.
- Pull the connector apart by the plastic body, not the wires.
Step 9: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts
- Support the outside mirror with one hand.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet handle to remove the mirror mounting nuts from inside the door.
- There are typically three mirror mounting nuts.
- Hold the mirror before removing the final nut so it does not fall.
Step 10: Remove the Old Mirror
- Guide the mirror wiring through the door opening by hand.
- Pull the mirror straight away from the outside of the door.
- Use a shop towel to clean dirt from the mirror mounting area.
- Do not scrape the paint with metal tools.
Step 11: Install the New Mirror
- Feed the new mirror wiring through the door opening by hand.
- Set the mirror studs into the door holes.
- Install the mounting nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the mirror nuts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Hand-start every nut first.
Step 12: Reconnect the Mirror Wiring
- Plug the mirror connector into the door harness by hand until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
- Route the wiring the same way it was originally placed so it will not interfere with the window glass.
Step 13: Reinstall the Door Panel
- Reconnect the window switch and lock connectors by hand until they click.
- Reconnect the inside handle cable using your fingers or needle-nose pliers.
- Hang the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
- Line up the clips with the door holes.
- Press around the edges of the panel by hand until the clips snap in.
Step 14: Reinstall Door Panel Screws and Covers
- Use a 7mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet handle to reinstall the door panel screws.
- Tighten the screws snugly. Do not overtighten because the panel is plastic.
- Use your fingers to snap the small screw covers back into place.
Step 15: Reinstall the Interior Mirror Trim Cover
- Line up the triangular trim cover with its clips.
- Press it into place by hand until it snaps in.
- Remove the painter’s tape from the outside of the door.
Step 16: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle to tighten the clamp snugly.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal clamp.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the ignition on and test mirror adjustment in all directions.
- ✅ If equipped, test mirror heat with the rear defrost button.
- ✅ If equipped, test the mirror turn signal or puddle lamp.
- ✅ Roll the window fully down and up to confirm the mirror wiring is not touching the glass.
- ✅ Check that the door lock, inside handle, outside handle, speaker, and window switch all work.
- ✅ If the auto-up window feature loses its memory, hold the window switch down until fully open, then hold it up until fully closed and continue holding for about 2 seconds.
