How to Replace Side View Mirror (Assembly or Glass) on a 2018 Ford Focus
Step-by-step DIY instructions with tools, parts list, wiring tips (heated/turn signal), and torque specs

🔧 Focus - Side View Mirror Replacement
On your Focus, the side mirror can be replaced as a complete mirror assembly (the whole unit) or as just the mirror glass (the reflective part). The assembly swap is common after a broken housing; the glass-only swap is common after cracked glass.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours (per side)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging mirror wiring.
- ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand when removing the nuts so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves—broken mirror glass is razor-sharp.
- ⚠️ If your mirror has heat/turn signal/indicator wiring, don’t pull on wires—pull on connectors.

- âť“ Quick check so I match the steps/parts: Does your mirror have heat and/or a turn signal in the mirror?
- âť“ Are you replacing the entire mirror assembly or just the mirror glass?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the inside sail-panel trim (mirror triangle cover)
- Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry off the small triangular trim panel at the front upper corner of the door (inside, by the A-pillar).
- If it feels stuck, work around the edges—this panel is held by clips.
- Pull straight out to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Unplug the mirror electrical connector (if equipped)
- Locate the mirror wiring connector behind the sail-panel area.
- Use a small flat plastic pry tool to lift the lock tab if needed, then unplug the connector by hand.
- If there’s a harness clip, use needle-nose pliers to release it without yanking wires.
Step 3: Remove the mirror mounting nuts
- Hold the mirror on the outside with one hand.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the 3 mounting nuts.
- Set the nuts aside (or replace them if damaged).
Step 4: Remove the mirror assembly from the door
- Carefully pull the mirror away from the door while guiding the wiring through the opening.
- Remove any foam gasket remnants from the door surface by hand (don’t scratch paint).
Step 5: Install the new mirror assembly
- Feed the mirror wiring through the door opening and position the mirror on the studs.
- Hand-thread the 3 nuts first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench (in-lb or Nm range) with a 10mm socket to tighten the nuts: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lb).
- Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
Step 6: Reinstall the sail-panel trim
- Line up the clips and press the trim back into place by hand.
- If clips won’t hold, replace them (they’re easy to break once removed).
Optional: Mirror glass-only replacement (if you’re not replacing the whole assembly)
- Use a trim removal tool set to carefully pry the mirror glass outward at an edge until it pops off the backing plate.
- If heated, disconnect the two heater terminals from the back of the glass by hand (note orientation).
- Reconnect heater terminals to the new glass (if equipped), align the center mount, then press evenly until it snaps in.
- Press near the center, not the edges.
âś… After Repair
- 🔌 Turn ignition ON and test mirror adjustment in all directions.
- If equipped, verify mirror heat (may take a few minutes), and check the mirror turn signal/indicator operation.
- 🚗 Take a short drive and listen for wind noise—if present, re-check mirror seating and gasket alignment.
