🔧 Shock Absorbers - Replacement

Replacing the shock absorbers restores ride control, reduces bouncing, and helps the tires stay planted on rough roads. On your Sierra, the front and rear shocks are separate components, so the job is usually straightforward with basic hand tools and safe lifting practices.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle securely with jack stands before removing any shocks.
  • Keep your hands clear of the suspension when lowering or raising the axle.
  • If a shock is rusted, use penetrating oil and work it slowly to avoid breaking hardware.
  • Replace shocks in pairs on the same axle for balanced handling.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Ratchet
  • Metric socket set
  • Combination wrench set
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Penetrating oil
  • Rubber mallet
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front shock absorbers - Qty: 2
  • Rear shock absorbers - Qty: 2
  • Shock mounting hardware kit - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the wheels that stay on the ground.
  • Spray the upper and lower shock bolts with penetrating oil and let it soak.
  • Lift only one axle at a time so the suspension stays controlled.
  • Work one side at a time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the truck

  • Use the floor jack to lift the truck at the proper lifting point.
  • Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
  • Make sure the vehicle is stable before you crawl underneath.

Step 2: Remove the wheel

  • Use the ratchet and a metric socket to remove the lug nuts.
  • Take off the wheel for better access to the shock absorber.

Step 3: Remove the lower shock bolt

  • Use a metric socket and combination wrench set to remove the lower shock fastener.
  • If the bolt is stuck, use the breaker bar and more penetrating oil.
  • Remove the nut and bolt completely.

Step 4: Remove the upper shock bolt

  • Use a metric socket and combination wrench set to remove the upper fastener.
  • Support the shock with one hand so it does not drop when the bolt comes out.
  • Remove the old shock absorber from the truck.

Step 5: Install the new shock absorber

  • Position the new shock in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Start the upper bolt by hand first, then install the lower bolt.
  • Use the ratchet to snug both fasteners, but do not fully tighten yet.
  • Hand-start every bolt first.

Step 6: Torque the shock fasteners

  • Lower the suspension slightly if needed so the shock sits at normal ride height.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the upper and lower shock bolts to factory specification.
  • Because exact torque varies by shock location and hardware, follow the spec for your shock position before final tightening.

Step 7: Reinstall the wheel

  • Put the wheel back on and install the lug nuts by hand.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to factory specification.

Step 8: Repeat on the other side and the other axle if needed

  • Repeat the same steps for the matching shock on the same axle.
  • If you are replacing all four shocks, move to the other axle after finishing the first pair.

✅ After Repair

  • Lower the truck completely and remove the jack stands.
  • Test drive slowly over bumps and listen for clunks or rattles.
  • Recheck the shock bolts and lug nuts after the drive.
  • If the truck still bounces excessively, inspect the springs and other suspension parts.
