🔧 Camaro - Tail/Rear Bulb Replacement (Most Common: Reverse Bulbs)
On your Camaro, the main red taillamps (brake/turn/running) are typically LED and not “bulb replaceable.” The most common rear bulbs you can replace are the clear reverse light bulbs (one on each side).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and remove the key.
- 🔥 If the bulbs were on, let them cool before touching.
- 🧤 Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for reverse bulb replacement.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Reverse light bulb (match the number printed on your old bulb) - Qty: 2
- Replacement trunk trim clips (optional) - Qty: 2-6
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🧰 Open the trunk and remove anything in the way of the rear corner trim.
- 🔦 Use a flashlight so you can clearly see the bulb socket and tabs.
- 📝 Quick check: confirm which light is out—have someone shift to Reverse (engine off, ignition on) while you look, or back up near a wall at night.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear lamp area from the trunk
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Use a flashlight to locate the trunk side trim panel behind the left taillamp area.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry out the trim clips holding the trunk liner/side panel.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver to lift the clip center first, then pull the clip out. Go slow to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Find the reverse bulb socket
- Look for the bulb socket going into the back of the rear lamp area (it will be a round twist-lock socket).
- Confirm it’s the reverse light socket by tracing the wire and matching it to the clear reverse lens area.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Grip the socket by hand and rotate it counterclockwise (usually about a 1/4 turn).
- Pull the socket straight out of the housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if tight).
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers; keep nitrile gloves on.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Reinsert the socket into the housing and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Test the reverse lights (ignition on, shift to Reverse with the clutch in and brake applied).
- If it doesn’t light: remove the socket again and reseat the bulb (some bulbs feel “in” but aren’t fully seated).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-5 for the other rear reverse bulb on the opposite side of the trunk.
Step 7: Reinstall the trunk trim
- Line up the trunk liner/side panel.
- Push the clips back in by hand; use the plastic trim removal tool to help align if needed.
âś… After Repair
- 🔍 Verify both reverse lights work and are the same brightness/color.
- 🧼 Make sure the trunk liner sits flat and clips are fully seated (no rattles).
- 🧯 If you used LED replacement bulbs and they flicker or don’t work, tell me—some need a specific design to avoid issues.
