🔧 Rear Window Regulators - Replacement

On your Sierra, the rear window regulator is the cable and track assembly that moves the glass up and down inside the rear door. Replacing it means removing the rear door panel, supporting the glass, disconnecting the regulator, and installing a new assembly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The rear door contains power window wiring and side-impact airbag wiring.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes after battery disconnect before handling any yellow airbag connectors.
  • Keep fingers clear of the glass edges and regulator tracks. The glass can move suddenly.
  • Support the window glass with tape before removing the regulator.
  • Do not operate the window switch with the regulator removed.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear window regulator assembly - Driver side: 1, Passenger side: 1
  • Rear door panel clip set - Qty: 1
  • Vapor barrier adhesive or butyl tape - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the rear door fully.
  • Lower the window if possible so the clamp fasteners are accessible.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Wait 2 minutes before touching any airbag-related connectors.
  • If the glass will not move, tape it to the door frame before disassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Set the cable aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
  • Let the truck power down for 2 minutes.

Step 2: Remove the rear door trim panel

  • Use a 7mm socket to remove the visible rear door panel screws.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to pop the retaining clips around the panel edge.
  • Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect the switch, speaker, and any courtesy light connectors.

Step 3: Peel back the moisture barrier

  • Carefully peel the vapor barrier away from the inner door shell.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool if needed to release the adhesive cleanly.
  • Save the barrier for reuse or reseal it later with butyl tape.

Step 4: Support and detach the glass

  • Use painter's tape to secure the glass in the up position.
  • Remove the access plugs covering the glass clamp openings if equipped.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the glass clamp bolts through the service holes.
  • Keep the glass supported so it does not drop when unclamped.

Step 5: Remove the old regulator

  • Unplug the regulator motor electrical connector.
  • Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the regulator mounting fasteners.
  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver if smaller motor or inner fasteners are used on your door.
  • Move the regulator assembly out through the largest access opening in the door.
  • Rotate the regulator to clear the track.

Step 6: Install the new regulator

  • Position the new regulator inside the door and align the mounting holes.
  • Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to install the regulator fasteners.
  • Tighten regulator fasteners to 8 N·m (71 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the motor electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Reattach the glass

  • Move the regulator by hand as needed to line up the clamp openings with the glass.
  • Set the glass back into the regulator clamps.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the glass clamp bolts.
  • Tighten glass clamp bolts to 8 N·m (71 in-lbs).
  • Remove the painter's tape after the glass is secure.

Step 8: Test the window before reassembly

  • Reconnect the battery temporarily and test the rear window switch.
  • Check that the glass moves smoothly from top to bottom.
  • Listen for binding, clicking, or cable noise.
  • If something is wrong, disconnect power again and correct it before reassembly.

Step 9: Reinstall the barrier and trim panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place with fresh butyl tape if needed.
  • Reconnect all trim panel electrical connectors.
  • Hook the panel on the window ledge, then press the clips into place.
  • Use a 7mm socket to reinstall the panel screws.
  • Tighten door trim screws to 2.5 N·m (22 in-lbs).

Step 10: Restore power and relearn the window

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Run the rear window all the way down, then all the way up.
  • Hold the switch in the up position for 2-3 seconds after it closes.

✅ After Repair

  • Test the rear window from the rear switch and the driver switch.
  • Make sure the glass seals evenly at the top.
  • Check for rattles, slow movement, or cable noise.
  • Verify the rear door panel sits flush and all switches work.
