  • Park your Highlander on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the affected rear window to about halfway if it still moves. This gives access to the glass-to-regulator bolts.
  • If the window does not move, you may need to remove the trim panel first, then manually position the glass after loosening the failed regulator.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Wait at least 90 seconds before working around door electrical connectors.
  • A moisture barrier is the plastic sheet behind the door panel that keeps rainwater away from the interior trim. Peel it gently so it can be reused.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Rear Door Screw Covers

  • Use a small pick tool to gently lift the small trim cover behind the inside door handle.
  • Use a small pick tool to lift the cover inside the door pull cup.
  • Work slowly so you do not scratch the trim. Tape the pick tip if needed.

Step 2: Remove the Rear Door Trim Screws

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw behind the inside door handle.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw inside the door pull cup.
  • Place the screws on a shop towel so they do not roll away.

Step 3: Release the Door Trim Panel Clips

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set at the lower edge of the door panel.
  • Pull outward gently to pop the first clip loose.
  • Continue around the sides and bottom of the panel with the plastic trim removal tool set.
  • If a clip stays in the door, use panel clip removal pliers to remove it and reinstall it into the door panel.

Step 4: Lift Off the Door Trim Panel

  • Use both hands to lift the door panel straight upward off the window ledge.
  • Support the panel close to the door so the wiring is not stretched.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release the inside handle cable clips if equipped.
  • Unplug the power window switch connector by pressing its lock tab with your fingers or a small pick tool.

Step 5: Peel Back the Moisture Barrier

  • Use your hands and a plastic trim removal tool set to gently peel back the plastic moisture barrier.
  • Do not tear the barrier. It must seal tightly when reinstalled.
  • If the black butyl seal stretches, roll it back onto the door with your fingers.

Step 6: Support the Window Glass

  • Use painter’s tape 2-inch wide to tape the glass to the outer door frame.
  • Run tape from the outside of the glass, over the top of the door frame, and down to the inside of the glass.
  • Apply at least three strips of tape. The glass must not slide down.

Step 7: Remove the Glass-to-Regulator Bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive, and 3-inch extension 3/8-inch drive to remove the two bolts holding the glass to the regulator.
  • If the bolts are not lined up with the access holes, temporarily reconnect the window switch and battery, move the regulator slightly, then disconnect the negative battery cable again using a 10mm socket.
  • Keep one hand near the glass while removing the final bolt.

Step 8: Secure the Glass Fully Up

  • Slide the glass upward by hand until it is fully closed.
  • Use painter’s tape 2-inch wide to add two more support strips across the top of the door frame.
  • Check that the glass does not move before removing the regulator.

Step 9: Unplug the Window Motor Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the lock tab on the rear window motor connector.
  • If the connector is stuck, use a small pick tool to gently lift the locking tab while pulling the connector straight out.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 10: Remove the Regulator Assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive, and 3-inch extension 3/8-inch drive to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • Support the regulator with one hand as the final bolt comes out.
  • Turn the regulator slightly and guide it out through the large door opening.
  • If the motor is being reused, place the old regulator on a clean shop towel before transferring the motor.

Step 11: Transfer the Window Motor if Needed

  • If your replacement regulator does not include a motor, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket as fitted to remove the motor fasteners from the old regulator.
  • Install the motor onto the new regulator in the same position.
  • Use a torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the motor fasteners snugly. Do not overtighten small motor screws.

Step 12: Install the New Regulator

  • Guide the new regulator assembly into the rear door through the large opening.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to start all regulator mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Use a torque wrench inch-pound range with a 10mm socket to tighten the regulator mounting bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Plug the window motor connector back in until it clicks.

Step 13: Reattach the Glass to the Regulator

  • Carefully remove only enough painter’s tape 2-inch wide to lower the glass by hand onto the regulator clamps or bolt holes.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to install the two glass-to-regulator bolts by hand.
  • Use a torque wrench inch-pound range with a 10mm socket to tighten the glass bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Make sure the glass sits evenly in the front and rear run channels.

Step 14: Test the Window Before Reassembly

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Plug in the rear window switch connector if it is still disconnected.
  • Turn the ignition ON and run the window fully down and fully up.
  • Listen for grinding, clicking, or binding. Stop immediately if the glass tilts or jams.
  • Use a 10mm socket to slightly loosen the glass bolts and realign the glass if needed.

Step 15: Reinstall the Moisture Barrier

  • Turn the ignition OFF.
  • Use your hands to press the moisture barrier back onto the butyl seal.
  • If the butyl seal is damaged or missing, use butyl sealing tape to reseal the plastic barrier.
  • Do not leave gaps at the bottom edge. Water leaks into the cabin can result.

Step 16: Reinstall the Rear Door Trim Panel

  • Reconnect the inside handle cables using your fingers or needle-nose pliers.
  • Reconnect the power window switch connector until it clicks.
  • Hang the door panel on the upper window ledge using both hands.
  • Press around the edges of the door panel to snap the clips back into place.

Step 17: Reinstall the Trim Screws and Covers

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw behind the inside door handle.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw inside the door pull cup.
  • Snap the screw covers back into place by hand.

āœ… After Repair

  • āœ… Cycle the repaired rear window fully up and down at least five times.
  • āœ… Confirm the window moves smoothly and seals evenly at the top.
  • āœ… Test the rear switch and the driver master switch.
  • āœ… If auto-up/down behavior is lost on any equipped window, initialize it by holding the switch fully down for 2 seconds after it reaches bottom, then holding fully up for 2 seconds after it reaches top.
  • āœ… Check that the door lock, inside handle, speaker, and switch panel all work before driving.
