🔧 Rear Window Regulators - Replacement

The rear window regulator lets the rear door glass move up and down. If the window binds, falls into the door, or makes grinding noises, the regulator assembly usually needs replacement.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the window glass before removing the regulator so it does not drop.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before working in the door. This helps prevent accidental window or lock operation.
  • Use care around sharp door-shell edges and the side air bag area in the door.
  • If the rear door has a power window switch, keep fingers clear during testing.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Socket extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Flat trim tool
  • Painter’s tape
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Torque wrench
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear door vapor barrier adhesive - Qty: 1
  • Replacement door panel clips - Qty: 1 set

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear door trim panel

  • Use a 7mm socket to remove the trim screws in the armrest and pull handle area.
  • Use a trim panel tool to release the door panel clips around the edges.
  • Lift the panel up and off the door shell.
  • Unplug any switch connectors carefully.

Step 2: Remove the water shield

  • Use a flat trim tool to peel the vapor barrier back slowly.
  • Save it if it is still sealed and reusable.

Step 3: Secure the glass

  • Raise or position the glass as needed and hold it with painter’s tape from the outside of the door.
  • If the regulator is broken, support the glass by hand while loosening the hardware.

Step 4: Remove the regulator from the door

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet with extension to remove the regulator bolts.
  • Disconnect the motor electrical connector.
  • Guide the regulator out through the access opening in the door.

Step 5: Install the new regulator

  • Position the new regulator in the door and start all fasteners by hand.
  • Reconnect the motor connector.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) for the regulator fasteners unless the replacement part instructions specify otherwise.

Step 6: Reattach and test the glass

  • Remove the tape and align the glass in the regulator clamps.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the glass-to-regulator fasteners.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Cycle the window up and down with the switch to verify smooth movement.

Step 7: Reassemble the door

  • Reinstall the vapor barrier and door panel clips.
  • Use a 7mm socket to install the trim screws.

🔧 Side View Mirrors - Replacement

The side view mirror assembly bolts to the door and connects to the power mirror wiring. If the housing is cracked, the glass is broken, or the adjustment motor has failed, replacing the full mirror assembly is usually the cleanest fix.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging mirror wiring.
  • Be careful not to scratch the paint or crack the mirror glass during removal.
  • If your Sierra has heated or power mirrors, make sure the connector is fully seated before reassembly.
