🔧 Escape - Rear Window Regulator Replacement

Replacing a rear window regulator on your Escape means removing the rear door trim, separating the glass from the regulator, and swapping the regulator (and sometimes the motor). There are a couple of factory variations, and I want to keep this trim-accurate and torque-spec correct.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (one door)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the window track and scissor/cable mechanism (it can pinch hard).
  • ⚠️ Support the glass with tape before unbolting it, so it can’t drop.
  • ⚠️ Do not turn the window switch with the glass detached.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended if you’ll unplug door wiring for a while (helps prevent accidental airbag/BCM faults).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Trim removal tool set
  • Small flat screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Extension set (3" and 6")
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Torque wrench (inch-lb)
  • Torque wrench (ft-lb)
  • Painters tape (2")
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • Work light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear window regulator - Qty: 1
  • Rear window regulator motor - Qty: 1 (only if motor is bad or not included)
  • Rear door trim panel clips - Qty: 6-12 (as needed)
  • Butyl adhesive strip (water shield reseal) - Qty: 1 (as needed)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, ignition OFF, and open the rear door you’re working on.
  • Lower the window until you can access the glass-to-regulator fasteners (if the regulator still moves).
  • If the window is stuck: you’ll manually position/support the glass once the panel is off.
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket, remove the negative terminal, and wait 2 minutes.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Before I give the exact steps and torque specs, answer these 2 quick questions:

  • Which side are you replacing: left rear or right rear?
  • Are you replacing the regulator only, or the regulator + motor?

Once you reply, I’ll give the exact fastener locations and torque specs.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the glass moves smoothly up/down and doesn’t tilt or bind.
  • Confirm the door lock, speaker, and handle all work before fully finishing.
  • Recheck the water shield is sealed all the way around (prevents leaks).
