🔧 Passport - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Passport, some rear lights use replaceable bulbs (commonly the reverse and rear turn signal), but the tail/brake light functions are typically LED and not replaced as a “bulb.” I’ll show you how to replace the serviceable bulbs on both sides, and I’ll also call out what to do if your tail/brake LED is what’s out.

Quick question (so I don’t point you wrong): Which light is out—reverse, rear turn signal, or tail/brake?

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ If you were just driving, let the exhaust area cool before reaching behind trim.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves; bulbs can be hot and glass can break.
  • ⚠️ Avoid touching glass bulbs with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Flashlight
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Rear reverse light bulb - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the tailgate and clear cargo so you can access the side panels.
  • Have your new bulbs ready and keep them clean (don’t touch the glass).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which rear light is out

  • Use a helper, or back near a wall/garage door to see reflections.
  • Check: turn signals, reverse lights (shift to R with brake held), and tail/brake lights.
  • Replacing both sides together is smart.

Step 2: Access the rear lamp bulb doors (inside cargo area)

  • Go to the left cargo-side trim and find the small access cover behind the taillamp area.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to gently pry the cover open.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the bulb socket(s) going into the lamp.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it (usually about 1/4 turn) to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp.
  • If it’s tight, use a nitrile gloves grip and wiggle gently—don’t force it.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket (most pull straight out; some twist). If it’s stuck, use a nitrile gloves grip and pull straight.
  • Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass). Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps keep moisture out.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Reinsert the socket into the lamp, align tabs, and twist to lock by hand.
  • Test the function you replaced (turn signal or reverse light).
  • Repeat Steps 2–5 on the other side.

Step 6: If your tail/brake light is out (LED type)

  • If the out light is the red tail/brake LED (not reverse/turn), it typically is not a replaceable bulb.
  • In that case, the fix is usually replacing the taillamp assembly (or repairing wiring if there’s no power).
  • Reply with which function is out and I’ll give you the correct LED/assembly replacement steps.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify left and right turn signals flash normally (not fast).
  • Verify both reverse lights work.
  • Close the access covers securely and make sure cargo trim sits flat.
  • If a new bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the fuse and the socket terminals for corrosion.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)
