🔧 Camry - Rear Bulb Service

On your Camry, the normal “taillight” (running and brake light) is built into LED units and is not a simple bulb. If those are out, the whole lamp assembly must be replaced. However, the rear turn signal and reverse (back‑up) lights use replaceable bulbs, and you can change those at home.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Make sure the engine is off, ignition is off, and the light switch is off before you start.
  • 🧯 Set the parking brake and keep the car in Park so it cannot roll.
  • 🧤 Let the bulbs and surrounding area cool if the lights were on recently; they can get hot.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this job, but do not work on any wiring with the lights switched on.
  • 🚫 Do not touch glass bulb surfaces with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.

  • 💡 Rear back‑up (reverse) bulb (921/W16W type, clear) - Qty: 2 (replace both sides)
  • 💡 Rear combination lamp assembly, outer (LED tail/brake) - Qty: 1 per side if LED tail/brake is bad
  • 💡 Rear combination lamp assembly, inner/trunk lid (LED, if equipped) - Qty: 1 per side if LED is bad
  • 🧴 Dielectric grease (for bulb contacts) - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 📎 Trunk trim clips - Qty: 4–8 (optional, in case any clips break)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park the Camry on level ground, set the parking brake, and shift to Park.
  • 🔦 Open the trunk and clear out anything that blocks access to the side trunk trim (carpets, bags, etc.).
  • 📱 If you’ll use your phone as a light or guide, make sure it’s charged and kept away from moving panels.
  • 🧽 Wipe dust off the area around the lamp access panels to prevent dirt from falling inside.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Understand what you can and cannot change

  • The rear tail and brake lights are LED in the outer lamp assemblies on your Camry; they are not separate bulbs.
  • If your running or brake light in the main taillight is out, you must replace the whole lamp assembly, not just a bulb.
  • The rear turn signal (amber) and reverse/back‑up light (white) use normal bulbs and can be replaced.
  • Check which light is actually out before disassembly.

Step 2: Access the outer rear lamp (turn signal bulb)

  • Open the trunk lid fully.
  • On the side where you’re working, look at the inner trunk wall next to the tail lamp. There is a small fabric or plastic trim panel/cover.
  • Use the trim removal tool to gently pry off any small plastic covers or clips holding the access panel.
  • Pull back the trunk lining carefully by hand to expose the rear of the outer tail lamp.
  • Do not yank; feel for hidden clips first.

Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Behind the outer lamp, you’ll see round bulb sockets with wiring.
  • The rear turn signal socket is usually the lower or outermost one, with an amber bulb inside.
  • Grip the socket body firmly with your hand.
  • Turn the socket about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand; if tight, you can gently help yourself by nudging with the flathead screwdriver on a tab, but do not pry hard.
  • Pull the socket straight out from the lamp housing.

Step 4: Replace the rear turn signal bulb

  • Hold the socket in one hand and the bulb base in the other.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket; wiggle gently if needed.
  • If it’s stuck, wrap it in a paper towel to improve grip and protect your fingers.
  • Clean the new 7440 amber bulb glass with a paper towel and a little rubbing alcohol, then let it dry.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Optional: put a tiny smear of dielectric grease on the metal contacts in the socket, not on the glass.

Step 5: Reinstall the rear turn signal socket

  • Line up the tabs on the socket with the cutouts in the tail lamp opening.
  • Insert the socket straight in.
  • Turn it about 1/4 turn clockwise by hand until it stops firmly.
  • If it won’t turn, pull out and realign tabs.

Step 6: Access the inner/trunk‑lid lamp (reverse bulb)

  • Move to the trunk lid itself. The reverse light bulb is usually in the inner lamp on the trunk lid.
  • Look at the inside of the trunk lid trim (the plastic cover on the underside of the lid).
  • Use the trim removal tool to gently pop out the plastic clips holding the trunk lid trim near the lamp.
  • Carefully pull the trim panel away enough to see the back of the lamp and bulb socket.

Step 7: Remove the reverse/back‑up light bulb

  • Identify the reverse bulb socket (usually marked, with a clear/white bulb, 921/W16W type).
  • Grip the socket and turn it 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out from the lamp.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Clean the new 921/W16W clear bulb with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel and let it dry.
  • Push the new bulb firmly into the socket until fully seated.

Step 8: Reinstall the reverse bulb socket and inner trim

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp opening, aligning the tabs.
  • Turn it 1/4 turn clockwise until it stops.
  • Reposition the trunk lid trim into place.
  • Press the trim clips back in by hand, or use the trim removal tool as a pusher if needed.

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–8 for the other side’s turn signal and reverse bulb so both sides match in brightness and color.
  • Replacing bulbs in pairs keeps lighting even.

Step 10: If your LED tail/brake (running light) is bad

  • If the LED portion of the outer tail lamp is out, you must change the entire lamp assembly.
  • With the trunk trim already pulled back (Step 2), unplug the main lamp connector by pressing its plastic tab with the flathead screwdriver and pulling it off.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and ratchet to remove the 2–3 mounting nuts holding the lamp to the body.
  • Carefully push the studs out from inside and pull the lamp assembly away from the car from the outside. There may be a locating pin; pull straight back.
  • Install the new lamp assembly in the same position, making sure it sits flush and the locating pin is engaged.
  • Install the 10mm nuts by hand first, then tighten with the 10mm socket and ratchet to 5.5 Nm (49 in‑lbs). Do not overtighten; the lamp housing is plastic.
  • Reconnect the lamp electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 11: Reinstall trunk trim and clean up

  • Put all trunk side liners and access panels back into place.
  • Press any plastic clips back in firmly by hand; if a clip broke, replace it with a new one.
  • Put any items you removed from the trunk back in.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔦 Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and switch on the parking lights: check that both rear running lights and any new lamp assemblies light up evenly.
  • 🛑 Press the brake pedal and have a helper confirm both brake lights illuminate brightly.
  • 🔁 Use the turn signal switch for left and right; confirm the rear turn signals flash normally.
  • 🔙 Shift briefly into Reverse (with the brake firmly pressed and the area behind clear) to confirm both reverse lights turn on.
  • 📸 Check the lights against a wall or at dusk to spot any dim bulbs or misalignment.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180–$280 (bulbs only, parts + labor) or $450–$750 if a full LED tail lamp assembly needs replacement.

DIY Cost: $20–$40 (bulbs only) or $200–$350 per LED lamp assembly.

You Save: $140–$400+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5–1.0 hours for bulbs and 1.0–1.5 hours if replacing a full lamp assembly.
