🔧 Altima - Taillight Bulb Service

On your Altima SR, the red running/brake “taillight” portion is an LED built into the lamp and is not a replaceable bulb. If that red section is out, the entire lamp assembly must be replaced. The only replaceable rear light bulbs are the turn signal and reverse (backup) bulbs on each side.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔹Always switch the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on lights.
  • 🔹Do not work on the lamps with the lights turned on; the bulbs and housings can get hot.
  • 🔹Wear safety glasses when prying trim or working in the trunk area.
  • 🔹Disconnecting the battery is not required, but you may disconnect the negative terminal with a 10mm wrench if you want extra safety.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔹10mm socket
  • 🔹1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🔹3" socket extension
  • 🔹Trim clip removal tool (specialty)
  • 🔹Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • 🔹Needle-nose pliers
  • 🔹Work gloves
  • 🔹Safety glasses
  • 🔹Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔹Rear turn signal bulbs (amber, 7440 or equivalent) - Qty: 2 (replace both sides)
  • 🔹Rear reverse/backup bulbs (7440/921 style or equivalent) - Qty: 2 (replace both sides)
  • 🔹Rear combination lamp assembly, left side (LED taillight) - Qty: 1 (only if left red section is bad)
  • 🔹Rear combination lamp assembly, right side (LED taillight) - Qty: 1 (only if right red section is bad)
  • 🔹Replacement trunk trim clips - Qty: 10 (optional, in case any break)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔹Park the Altima on level ground, engage the parking brake, and switch the ignition OFF.
  • 🔹Open the trunk and remove any luggage or mats covering the side trunk trim.
  • 🔹If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal and move it aside so it cannot touch the post.
  • 🔹Keep new bulbs clean; avoid touching the glass with bare fingers. Oil shortens bulb life

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear of the taillight

  • 🔹Open the trunk fully so you can see the side trunk trim behind each taillight.
  • 🔹Use the trim clip removal tool or a flathead screwdriver to gently pry out the plastic clips holding the side trunk liner near the lamp.
  • 🔹Pull the trunk side liner back with your hand to expose the rear of the taillight housing and bulb sockets.

Step 2: Identify which bulbs you’re replacing

  • 🔹Have a helper briefly turn the turn signal and shift to reverse (with foot on brake) while you watch from behind to see which bulbs are out, then turn everything OFF.
  • 🔹The amber turn signal bulb is usually the larger socket toward the outer side of the lamp.
  • 🔹The reverse bulb is usually the clear/white bulb toward the inner side.
  • 🔹The red running/brake light is LED and has no removable bulb.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • 🔹Grasp the bulb socket body with your hand from inside the trunk.
  • 🔹Rotate the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn using your hand; if tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the plastic tabs, do not crush.
  • 🔹Pull the socket straight out from the taillight housing.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • 🔹Hold the socket in one hand and the bulb in the other.
  • 🔹Most rear bulbs on this Altima are “wedge” style; pull the bulb straight out of the socket by hand. Wiggle gently if stuck
  • 🔹If it’s a bayonet type (with small pins), push in slightly and twist counterclockwise, then pull out.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • 🔹Without touching the glass, push the new bulb firmly into the socket until fully seated.
  • 🔹If the bulb is not going in easily, check orientation and retry; do not force it.
  • 🔹For turn signals, use the correct amber bulb; for reverse, use clear/white.

Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket in the taillight

  • 🔹Align the tabs of the bulb socket with the openings in the taillight housing.
  • 🔹Insert the socket fully into the housing.
  • 🔹Rotate the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn by hand until it stops and feels snug. Do not overtighten

Step 7: Test the lights

  • 🔹Before closing the trunk liner, turn the ignition ON (engine not required).
  • 🔹Turn on the headlights (for tail function), press the brake, turn on the turn signals, and shift briefly into reverse (with brake applied) to confirm all bulbs work.
  • 🔹If a bulb does not light, turn ignition OFF, remove the bulb, reseat it firmly, and test again.

Step 8: Reinstall trunk trim

  • 🔹Push the trunk side liner back into its original position by hand.
  • 🔹Reinstall each plastic trim clip by hand, then press fully in; if tight, use the trim clip removal tool or flathead screwdriver to press the center pin flush.
  • 🔹Repeat the process on the opposite side for the other bulbs.

Step 9: If the red LED taillight is out (lamp replacement)

  • 🔹From inside the trunk, with liner pulled back, locate the two or three 10mm nuts holding the taillight assembly.
  • 🔹Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and ratchet to remove the nuts.
  • 🔹From outside the car, gently pull the taillight assembly straight rearward; it will pop out of locating pins. Rock gently side to side
  • 🔹Disconnect the wiring connector by pressing the tab with your finger and pulling the connector off.
  • 🔹Position the new taillight assembly, reconnect the wiring connector, and push the lamp into place so the pins seat fully.
  • 🔹Reinstall the 10mm nuts with the ratchet and snug them evenly: Torque to about 5–7 Nm (44–62 in-lbs) (just firm, do not crush the plastic).
  • 🔹Test the lights again, then reinstall the trunk liner and clips.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔹Verify all rear lights: tail/running lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights on both sides.
  • 🔹Check from a distance at night if possible to confirm brightness and visibility.
  • 🔹Make sure all trunk trim is secure and there are no rattles when you close the trunk.
  • 🔹No scan tool or system reset is needed for this repair.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120–$220 (bulbs only, parts + labor) / $350–$600 each if replacing a full LED taillight assembly

DIY Cost: $20–$40 (bulbs only) / $200–$350 each for a taillight assembly

You Save: $100–$200 on bulb replacement and $150–$250 per taillight assembly by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5–1.0 hour.
