š§ Forester - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Forester, the rear turn signal bulb is usually inside the outer rear tail lamp assembly (left and right). The job is mostly about getting access to the bulb socket from inside the cargo area, swapping the bulb, and confirming it flashes normally.

š Before You Begin
- š§° Open the rear hatch and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
- š§° Have your small flashlight ready; the bulb socket can be hard to see.
- š§° Optional check: turn on the hazards briefly to confirm which side is out, then turn everything OFF.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear lamp area
- Open the hatch and go to the side youāre replacing (left or right).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop open the small access cover in the cargo-side trim (behind the tail lamp area). Start at an edge and pry slowly.
- If your Forester has a fastener or tie-down blocking access, remove it using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, or a Phillips screwdriver #2 (varies by position).
Step 2: Identify the turn signal socket
- Use a small flashlight to look into the opening and find the bulb sockets on the back of the tail lamp.
- The turn signal socket is typically the amber-bulb position in the outer tail lamp (not the reverse light).
- If youāre unsure which socket is the turn signal, you can have a helper turn on the hazards while you watch for the flashing reflection, then turn hazards OFF before removing anything.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it about a quarter-turn counterclockwise by hand.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (itās a push-in style).
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- A ābulb socketā is the plastic holder that twists into the lamp and carries the bulb and wiring.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Reinsert the socket into the lamp housing, making sure it seats evenly.
- Rotate the socket clockwise about a quarter-turn until it locks.
- Turn the hazards ON and confirm the repaired side flashes normally at the rear.
- If it doesnāt work, turn hazards OFF, remove the socket again, and make sure the bulb is fully pushed in and the socket is fully locked.
Step 6: Reassemble the interior trim
- Reinstall any fasteners you removed using the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet or Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Snap the access cover back in place by pressing around its edges by hand.
- Repeat on the other side if youāre replacing bulbs in pairs (recommended).
ā After Repair
- š§Ŗ Verify left and right turn signals work from the stalk and with hazards.
- š§Ŗ Walk around the vehicle to confirm no other rear lamp functions were disturbed (tail, brake, reverse).
- š§Ŗ If the turn signal blinks fast (hyperflash), the bulb may be the wrong type or not seated fully.
