How to Replace Rear Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2020 Nissan Rogue
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts, safety tips, and testing instructions to change 7440 rear turn signal bulbs

🔧 Rogue - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the rear turn signal bulbs in the tail lights of your Rogue. This means removing the tail light assembly, swapping the bulbs, and putting everything back carefully so nothing cracks or leaks.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸Always switch the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on lights.
- 🔸Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes; they can get hot and burn fingers.
- 🔸Do not touch the glass of new bulbs with bare fingers; oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
- 🔸Set the parking brake and keep the Rogue on level ground so it cannot roll.
- 🔸Battery disconnect is not required, but you can remove the negative terminal for extra safety if you prefer.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔸10mm socket
- 🔸1/4" drive ratchet
- 🔸Short extension (1/4" drive)
- 🔸Phillips #2 screwdriver
- 🔸Plastic trim removal tool
- 🔸Clean microfiber cloth
- 🔸Disposable gloves
- 🔸Safety glasses
- 🔸Small magnetic pickup tool
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔸Rear turn signal bulb (7440/7440A amber) - Qty: 2 (replace both sides)
- 🔸Rear combination lamp mounting clips (if damaged) - Qty: 2-4
- 🔸Dielectric grease for bulb contacts - Qty: 1 small tube
- 🔸Disposable shop towels - Qty: 1 pack
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🔸Park the Rogue on a flat surface, shift to P (Park), and set the parking brake.
- 🔸Turn off all lights and the ignition.
- 🔸Open the rear liftgate to access the tail light mounting bolts.
- 🔸Put on safety glasses and gloves to protect your eyes and hands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail light mounting area
- 🔸Open the liftgate fully so you can see the inner edge of the tail lights.
- 🔸Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently pop off any small plastic bolt covers on the inner edge of the tail light (if equipped).
- 🔸Set the covers aside somewhere safe so they don’t get lost.
Step 2: Remove the tail light mounting bolts
- 🔸Use the 10mm socket with the 1/4" ratchet and extension to remove the two visible bolts on the inner edge of the tail light.
- 🔸Hold the tail light with your other hand as you remove the second bolt so it doesn’t shift.
- 🔸There is no specific torque spec from Nissan for these when reinstalling; you will reinstall them hand-tight only (snug, not forced).
- 🔸Place the bolts in a small container so they don’t roll away.
Step 3: Release the tail light from the body
- 🔸The outer side of the tail light is held in by plastic alignment pins and clips, not bolts.
- 🔸With one hand on the outer edge of the tail light, gently pull the lamp straight rearward (toward you), not sideways.
- 🔸Use your other hand to support the inner edge so the lamp doesn’t twist.
- 🔸You may feel resistance from the clips; use a smooth, firm pull, not a jerk. Wiggle slightly side-to-side if stuck.
Step 4: Disconnect the wiring and locate the turn signal socket
- 🔸Carefully pull the tail light assembly away from the body just enough to see the bulb sockets and wiring harness.
- 🔸If needed, use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove any small screws holding a rear cover on the lamp (if present on your lamp design).
- 🔸The rear turn signal bulb is usually the upper or middle bulb with an amber-colored lens section. Look for the socket labeled or shaped for the turn signal (bulb type 7440).
- 🔸Do not disconnect the main wiring connector unless you need more room. If you do, press the locking tab with your thumb and pull the connector straight out.
Step 5: Remove the rear turn signal bulb
- 🔸Grip the turn signal bulb socket firmly.
- 🔸Turn the socket about 1/4 turn counterclockwise using your hand only, then pull it straight out of the tail light housing.
- 🔸Hold the socket and gently pull the old bulb straight out with your fingers. If it’s tight, wiggle it slightly while pulling.
- 🔸Let the old bulb cool before handling if it was recently on.
Step 6: Install the new bulb
- 🔸Put on disposable gloves so you don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers.
- 🔸Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the bulb’s metal contacts if available. This helps prevent corrosion.
- 🔸Push the new 7440 amber bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated.
- 🔸Inspect that the bulb is straight and secure, not wobbly.
Step 7: Reinstall the bulb socket into the tail light
- 🔸Align the tabs on the bulb socket with the slots in the tail light housing.
- 🔸Insert the socket into the housing, then turn it 1/4 turn clockwise by hand until it stops.
- 🔸Make sure it is fully locked; it should not turn back freely.
Step 8: Test the new bulb before reassembly
- 🔸Temporarily let the tail light hang supported by one hand or rest it gently against the body without pinching wires.
- 🔸Close the liftgate enough that the interior lights go off, but don’t latch it fully if you need access.
- 🔸Turn the ignition to ON (engine can be off), and activate the left or right turn signal for the side you replaced.
- 🔸Check that the new bulb flashes at normal speed and is bright.
- 🔸If it does not light, turn everything off, reseat the bulb in the socket, and test again.
Step 9: Reinstall the tail light assembly
- 🔸Turn the ignition OFF and make sure the turn signals are off.
- 🔸If you disconnected the wiring connector earlier, reconnect it now by pushing it straight in until it clicks.
- 🔸Align the plastic alignment pins on the back of the tail light with the holes in the body.
- 🔸Gently press the lamp straight forward (toward the front of the Rogue) until the clips snap into place.
- 🔸Install the two 10mm bolts with the 10mm socket and ratchet. Tighten hand-tight only — snug but not hard, to avoid cracking the plastic. There is no published torque spec for these from Nissan.
- 🔸Reinstall any plastic bolt covers by pressing them back into place by hand.
Step 10: Repeat on the other side
- 🔸Repeat Steps 1–9 for the opposite rear turn signal so both sides have fresh bulbs.
- 🔸Always replace bulbs in pairs so brightness and color match.
âś… After Repair
- 🔸Turn the ignition ON and check left and right rear turn signals.
- 🔸Also test hazard lights so both rear turn signals flash together.
- 🔸Look from different angles and distances to confirm both bulbs are equally bright.
- 🔸Confirm the tail lights and brake lights still work normally after reassembly.
- 🔸Take a short drive and check turn signals again when you return, in case a bulb wasn’t fully seated.
