🔧 Highlander - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulbs on both sides of your Highlander. The rear turn signal bulbs are accessed from behind the rear lamp area through the cargo-side access panels, so this is a good beginner repair.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before removing any bulb socket.
  • ⚠️ Allow the bulbs to cool if the hazard lights or turn signals were recently used.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can create hot spots and shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • ⚠️ If your Highlander has an LED rear turn signal assembly, the LED portion is not serviced as a separate bulb and the lamp assembly must be replaced.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool set
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulbs - Left and Right - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small packet

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Highlander on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key from the vehicle area.
  • Open the liftgate and remove cargo from both rear corners.
  • A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps open panels without scratching interior trim.
  • Dielectric grease is a moisture-blocking electrical grease used lightly around seals, not packed into contacts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the left rear cargo access panel

  • Stand behind your Highlander with the liftgate open.
  • Look at the rear corner trim panel near the left taillight area.
  • Use the trim removal tool set to gently pry open the small access cover.
  • If using the small flathead screwdriver, wrap the tip with a clean microfiber towel first to prevent scratches.
  • Use light pressure only.

Step 2: Identify the rear turn signal socket

  • Look through the access opening behind the rear lamp housing.
  • Find the turn signal bulb socket. It is the twist-lock socket connected to a wiring harness for the amber flashing bulb.
  • Wear nitrile gloves before handling the bulb.
  • If needed, turn on the hazard lights briefly, observe which bulb flashes, then turn the ignition and hazard switch off before removing it.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the turn signal socket by hand.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise about one-quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • Do not pull on the wires.
  • No torque spec applies; this is a hand-locking bulb socket.

Step 4: Remove the old rear turn signal bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • If the bulb is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling straight outward.
  • Use the clean microfiber towel to wipe any dirt from the socket opening.
  • Inspect the socket for heat damage, corrosion, or moisture.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • With nitrile gloves on, push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease around the socket seal if supplied.
  • Do not smear grease on the bulb glass or fill the electrical contacts.
  • A little grease is enough.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket

  • Align the socket tabs with the slots in the rear lamp housing.
  • Push the socket into the housing by hand.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about one-quarter turn until it locks.
  • Make sure the socket sits flat and does not feel loose.

Step 7: Replace the right rear turn signal bulb

  • Move to the right rear cargo-side access panel.
  • Use the trim removal tool set or the towel-wrapped small flathead screwdriver to open the access cover.
  • Repeat the same removal and installation steps for the right rear turn signal bulb.
  • Replace both sides together for matching brightness and service life.

Step 8: Test both rear turn signals

  • Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine, or press the hazard light switch.
  • Check the left rear turn signal for a steady flashing pattern.
  • Check the right rear turn signal for a steady flashing pattern.
  • If one side flashes very fast, recheck the bulb seating and socket connection.

Step 9: Reinstall the access covers

  • Press each cargo access cover back into place by hand.
  • Make sure the covers sit flush with the surrounding trim.
  • Use the clean microfiber towel to wipe fingerprints from the lamp area.

✅ After Repair

  • Test the left turn signal, right turn signal, and hazard lights.
  • Confirm both rear bulbs flash at normal speed.
  • Confirm no warning message appears on the dash.
  • No scan tool, coding, or infotainment reset is required.
