🔧 Camry - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll be removing the rear lamp assemblies from your Camry to replace the rear turn signal bulbs. The bulbs sit behind the tail lamp housings, accessed from inside the trunk.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹Always turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on lights.
- 🔹Let the bulbs cool before touching them; they can get very hot.
- 🔹Do not touch the glass part of new bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- 🔹Keep the trunk area clear so trim panels do not get damaged or dirty.
- 🔹Battery disconnect is not required for this repair, but make sure lights are switched off.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔹10mm socket
- 🔹1/4" drive ratchet
- 🔹1/4" drive extension (3"-6")
- 🔹Trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🔹Small flathead screwdriver
- 🔹Work light or flashlight
- 🔹Mechanic gloves
- 🔹Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔹Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
- 🔹Rear lamp housing gasket (optional) - Qty: 2
- 🔹Dielectric grease for bulb contacts - Qty: 1 tube
- 🔹Replacement trunk trim clips - Qty: 4-6
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔹Park the Camry on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔹Turn the headlight and hazard switches OFF.
- 🔹Open the trunk and remove any luggage or items near the side trim.
- 🔹Position a work light so you can clearly see inside the trunk.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open trunk and move trunk lining
- 🔹Open the trunk fully and stand behind the Camry.
- 🔹On the side you’re working on, gently pull back the side trunk carpet/lining near the tail light area.
- 🔹Use the trim removal tool to carefully pop out any plastic push clips holding the trunk lining, so you can access the metal body behind it. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips
Step 2: Locate tail lamp mounting nuts
- 🔹With the trunk lining pulled back, look at the inside of the rear corner where the tail lamp sits.
- 🔹You will see two or more studs coming through the body with nuts on them; these secure the outer tail lamp assembly.
- 🔹Use the work light or flashlight to clearly see the nuts and connectors.
Step 3: Remove tail lamp mounting nuts
- 🔹Install the 10mm socket on the 1/4" drive ratchet with the extension.
- 🔹Use the 10mm socket to loosen and remove the tail lamp nuts. Keep the nuts in a safe place.
- 🔹There may also be a plastic locating clip or pin; do not force it yet, just note its location.
- 🔹Factory torque for these nuts on reassembly is Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
Step 4: Disconnect the tail lamp electrical connector
- 🔹Find the main electrical connector attached to the tail lamp wiring inside the trunk.
- 🔹Use the small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the lock tab on the connector if needed.
- 🔹Pull the connector straight off by hand; do not pull on the wires. Wiggle gently if it feels stuck
Step 5: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- 🔹From outside the car, place one hand on the tail lamp lens and the other on the side of the lamp.
- 🔹Gently pull the lamp straight back away from the body. It may feel snug due to alignment pins and gasket.
- 🔹If needed, use your other hand from inside the trunk to push lightly on the studs while pulling from outside.
- 🔹Careful not to scratch the paint; keep the lamp close to the body while removing.
Step 6: Locate and remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- 🔹Turn the lamp over so you can see the bulb sockets on the back.
- 🔹Find the socket marked or positioned for the turn signal (typically the amber bulb, usually toward the outer or mid area of the lamp).
- 🔹Grip the bulb socket firmly and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
- 🔹Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
Step 7: Remove the old bulb
- 🔹Hold the socket in one hand and the bulb in the other.
- 🔹Pull the 7440 amber bulb straight out of the socket. It is a wedge-style bulb that pulls out, not a twist type.
- 🔹If it is stuck, gently rock it side to side while pulling.
Step 8: Install the new bulb
- 🔹If using dielectric grease, apply a very small amount to the metal contacts in the socket (not on the glass).
- 🔹Hold the new 7440 amber bulb by the base, not the glass.
- 🔹Push the bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated.
- 🔹Wipe the glass with a clean cloth if you accidentally touch it.
Step 9: Reinstall bulb socket into tail lamp
- 🔹Align the bulb socket tabs with the opening in the tail lamp housing.
- 🔹Insert the socket fully into the lamp.
- 🔹Rotate the socket about 1/4 turn clockwise by hand until it stops and locks in place.
Step 10: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- 🔹Carefully position the tail lamp back onto the car body, aligning the guide pins and studs with their holes.
- 🔹Push the lamp straight in until it sits flush with the body panels.
- 🔹From inside the trunk, start the 10mm nuts by hand on the studs.
- 🔹Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to snug the nuts evenly.
- 🔹Tighten both nuts to Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs). Do not overtighten; you can crack the lamp
Step 11: Reconnect the electrical connector
- 🔹Plug the main tail lamp connector back into the lamp until it clicks.
- 🔹Lightly tug on the connector to confirm it is fully locked.
Step 12: Refit the trunk lining
- 🔹Move the trunk side carpet/lining back into its original position.
- 🔹Reinstall any plastic clips you removed earlier, pressing them in by hand or with the trim removal tool to seat them fully.
- 🔹Repeat Steps 1–12 on the other side if you are replacing both rear turn signal bulbs.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹Switch the ignition to ON (engine can be off) and activate the turn signals one side at a time to confirm both rear turn signals flash normally.
- 🔹Turn on the hazard lights and walk behind the Camry to verify both sides flash evenly and at normal speed.
- 🔹Check that the tail lights, brake lights, and reverse lights still operate correctly.
- 🔹Close the trunk and confirm the tail lamps fit flush with the body and there are no gaps where water could enter.
