🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs on your Altima is a simple beginner-friendly job. You’ll access the rear combination lamp from inside the trunk, remove the bulb socket, and install the new bulb so the turn signal flashes normally again.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the vehicle off and keep the key fob away from the car while working.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch hot bulbs right after use; let the lamp cool for a few minutes.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp trunk trim edges.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 per side
  • Rear turn signal bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Altima on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo near the rear corner you are working on.
  • A trim clip removal tool is a small plastic pry tool used to remove plastic fasteners without damaging the trunk liner.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Trunk and Locate the Access Area

  • Use the trunk release button or key fob to open the trunk.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the inner trunk liner behind the rear lamp assembly.
  • The rear turn signal bulb socket is accessed from behind the tail lamp area inside the trunk.

Step 2: Move the Trunk Liner Aside

  • Use the trim clip removal tool to gently pry out the plastic trunk liner clips near the lamp area.
  • If a clip has a center pin, use a small flathead screwdriver to lift the center pin first, then remove the clip.
  • Pull the trunk liner back just enough to reach the bulb sockets.
  • Go slow to avoid breaking clips.

Step 3: Find the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket

  • Use the flashlight to identify the turn signal bulb socket on the rear lamp assembly.
  • The turn signal socket is usually the amber bulb position in the rear combination lamp.
  • Do not pull on the wiring harness; handle the plastic socket body only.

Step 4: Remove the Bulb Socket

  • Use your gloved hand to grip the bulb socket.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • No torque spec applies to this twist-lock bulb socket; hand-tight only.

Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb

  • Use clean nitrile gloves to grip the old bulb.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket if it is a wedge-style bulb.
  • If the bulb is tight, gently wiggle it side to side while pulling.
  • Do not crush the glass bulb.

Step 6: Install the New Bulb

  • Use clean nitrile gloves to handle the new rear turn signal bulb.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Make sure the bulb feels secure and does not wobble.
  • Clean gloves keep bulbs working longer.

Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Use your gloved hand to insert the bulb socket back into the lamp housing.
  • Align the socket tabs with the housing slots.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
  • Hand-tight only; do not use pliers or force.

Step 8: Test the Turn Signal

  • Close the trunk only partway or leave it open safely.
  • Turn the ignition to accessory mode or start the vehicle.
  • Use the turn signal stalk to test the side you repaired.
  • Use the hazard switch to test both rear turn signals if you replaced both bulbs.
  • If the bulb does not light, turn the vehicle off and reseat the bulb and socket.

Step 9: Reinstall the Trunk Liner

  • Use your hands to move the trunk liner back into place.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool or your fingers to reinstall the plastic clips.
  • Press each clip firmly until it sits flat against the liner.
  • Make sure the liner is not pinching any wiring.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the rear turn signal flashes at normal speed.
  • ✅ Check the hazard lights from behind the vehicle.
  • ✅ If the signal still flashes quickly, the bulb may not be seated correctly or another bulb on that side may be out.
  • ✅ No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required.
