🔧 Sienna - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Sienna’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the outer tail lamp assemblies. To replace them, you remove the tail lamp (from the hatch opening), twist out the bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔸 Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool (hot bulbs can burn you).
  • 🔸 Don’t force the tail lamp—plastic alignment pins can snap if pulled at the wrong angle.
  • 🔸 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop rag

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440A / amber) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Open the rear hatch for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Lay a clean shop rag on the bumper edge under the lamp area to prevent scratches.
  • Put on nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb and lens area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the correct bulb and side

  • Turn on the hazard lights and walk around to confirm which rear turn signal is out.
  • Turn the hazards OFF before disassembly.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the hatch and locate the two tail lamp retaining nuts/bolts on the inboard edge of the tail lamp.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the fasteners.
  • Place the fasteners somewhere safe so they don’t drop into the trim.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly off

  • With the fasteners removed, hold the tail lamp with both hands.
  • Pull the lamp straight rearward (toward you), not outward to the side.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it release. Gentle pressure only

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (it’s the socket that aligns with the amber turn section of the lens).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
  • A “socket” is the plastic piece that holds the bulb.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old 7440A / amber bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
  • Optional: Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb contacts).

Step 6: Test the bulb before reassembly

  • Reinstall the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and confirm the new bulb flashes normally.
  • Turn hazards OFF.

Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly

  • Line up the lamp’s alignment pins with the body holes, then press the lamp straight forward until it seats.
  • Reinstall the fasteners using the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
  • Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)

Step 8: Final function check

  • Turn on the hazards and both turn signals (left and right) to confirm normal operation.
  • Verify the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.

âś… After Repair

  • Make sure the flash rate is normal (not “rapid flashing”).
  • Check at night that the lens is seated evenly and no light leaks around the lamp.
  • If the new bulb still doesn’t work, the next checks are the socket contacts and wiring connector fit.
