🔧 RAV4 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This procedure will show you how to remove the rear lamp assemblies and replace the rear turn signal bulbs on your RAV4. You’ll be working mostly from inside the rear hatch area and then sliding the lamp straight out.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Make sure the ignition is OFF and the key is out before starting.
- 🛑 Do not use metal tools on painted surfaces; they can scratch the paint.
- 🛑 Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes if they were just used; they can be hot.
- 🛑 Do not touch the glass of new bulbs with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- 🛑 Keep the vehicle in Park with the parking brake firmly set.
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

- 🔩 Replacement tail lamp mounting clips - Qty: 2 (optional, if damaged)
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park the RAV4 on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn off the ignition.
- 🚪 Open the rear hatch fully so you have clear access to both rear lamp areas.
- 🧼 Put on safety glasses and gloves before you start working.
- 🧽 Lay a clean microfiber cloth over the bumper edge under the tail lamps to protect the paint while you work.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear lamp mounting area
- 🪛 Open the rear hatch and look at the inside edge of the tail lamp where it meets the hatch opening; you will see a small plastic trim cover or exposed bolts, depending on exact build.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently pry off any small plastic covers hiding the bolts. A trim tool is a plastic lever designed to remove clips without scratching.
- Under the covers, you will see two mounting fasteners: usually one 10mm bolt and/or one Phillips screw.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp mounting fasteners
- 🧰 Use the 10mm socket with the 1/4" drive ratchet and short extension to remove the 10mm bolt securing the inner side of the tail lamp.
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove any Phillips screw at the inner edge of the lamp.
- Set the bolt and screw aside somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
- Reinstallation torque: Tighten these fasteners later to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs). Snug, not very tight.
Step 3: Slide the tail lamp assembly off the body
- 🤲 Stand behind the corner of the RAV4 and place one hand on the outer edge of the tail lamp and the other on the inner edge near the hatch.
- Pull the lamp straight rearward (toward you), not sideways. It is held by two plastic locator pins that plug into the body.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle while pulling straight back. Do not pry with metal tools; use the plastic trim removal tool if you need a bit of leverage at the inner edge.
- Go slow to avoid cracking the plastic tabs.
Step 4: Disconnect the wiring connector
- 🔌 Once the lamp is loose, support it with one hand and turn it so you can see the wiring connector on the back.
- Press the small locking tab on the connector with your thumb and pull the connector straight off the lamp. If needed, use the plastic trim tool to gently press the tab.
- Set the lamp on the microfiber-covered bumper or hold it in one hand while you work on the bulbs.
Step 5: Locate and remove the turn signal bulb socket
- 💡 On the back of the tail lamp, identify the turn signal bulb socket. On the RAV4, it is typically the larger socket toward the outer-upper area and the bulb glass is amber.
- Grip the socket body and turn it about a quarter-turn counterclockwise.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp to expose the bulb.
Step 6: Remove the old bulb
- 🧤 Hold the socket firmly and pull the old 7440 bulb straight out from the socket. It is a push-fit style bulb.
- If it is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling. Do not twist the glass.
- Inspect the socket for any signs of burning or corrosion (green or white powder). If you see this, wipe lightly with the microfiber cloth.
Step 7: Install the new bulb
- 🧴 If you have dielectric grease, apply a tiny dab to the bulb’s metal base contacts. Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent corrosion.
- With clean gloves on, push the new 7440 amber bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated.
- Do not touch the glass with bare fingers.
Step 8: Reinstall the bulb socket into the lamp
- 🔁 Align the tabs on the bulb socket with the slots in the tail lamp opening.
- Insert the socket fully, then turn it a quarter-turn clockwise until it stops and feels locked.
- Make sure it is seated evenly so moisture cannot enter.
Step 9: Reconnect the wiring and test the bulb
- 🔌 Plug the wiring connector back into the tail lamp until it clicks. Gently tug to confirm it is locked.
- Temporarily hold the lamp in position by hand (do not install bolts yet).
- Sit in the driver’s seat, turn the ignition to ON, and activate the left or right turn signal for the side you just worked on.
- Walk to the rear and confirm the new bulb flashes normally—bright and steady, not hyper-flashing (very fast blink).
- Turn ignition OFF after the test.
Step 10: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly
- 🔩 Align the two plastic locator pins on the back of the lamp with the holes in the body.
- Push the lamp straight forward into place until it seats flush with the body panel.
- Install the 10mm bolt using the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension. Then install the Phillips screw using the Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Tighten both to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs). Just snug; do not overtighten.
- Reinstall any plastic covers using your fingers or the plastic trim removal tool to press them back in.
Step 11: Repeat on the other side
- 🔁 Repeat Steps 1–10 on the other rear turn signal so both sides have fresh bulbs. This keeps brightness and color even.
✅ After Repair
- 🔎 Turn the ignition ON and check both rear turn signals, the hazard lights, and brake lights to confirm everything works correctly.
- 🚗 With a helper, check from a distance behind the RAV4 to ensure brightness is equal on both sides.
- 🧽 Remove any tools or cloths from the cargo area and wipe fingerprints off the lamp lenses if needed.
