🔧 Land Cruiser - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Land Cruiser’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the rear combination lamp (tail light). Replacing it usually means opening the rear hatch and removing a small access panel inside the cargo area so you can twist the bulb socket out.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool—rear bulbs can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of an incandescent bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support trim panels as you remove them to avoid cracking clips.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool set (plastic)
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber; match the type printed on your bulb such as 7440/7440A) - Qty: 1 Replace in pairs recommended

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the rear hatch for access and lighting.
  • Decide which side you’re replacing: left or right.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the correct bulb location

  • Turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then OFF, to identify which rear lamp section is blinking.
  • Use flashlight to see which lens area flashes (this helps you grab the correct socket).

Step 2: Remove the interior access cover (cargo area)

  • On the same side as the failed signal, locate the small trim/access door behind the tail lamp area.
  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to gently pry the cover open.
  • If your access panel uses a fastener, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver #2 or 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (whichever your panel has).
  • Go slow—clips pop out suddenly.

Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Reach through the opening and find the socket going into the tail lamp housing.
  • Use your hand (or nitrile gloves for grip) to rotate the socket about 1/4 turn counterclockwise, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, use the flashlight to confirm you’re turning the socket (not the wiring).

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket using nitrile gloves.
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber; match type printed on old bulb) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Don’t force it—aligned pins slide in smoothly.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing, making sure the O-ring seats evenly.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Turn the hazards ON to confirm the new bulb flashes at a normal speed.

Step 6: Reinstall the access cover

  • Reinstall any fastener using a Phillips screwdriver #2 or 10mm socket with 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Press the access panel back into place by hand until clips fully snap in.

âś… After Repair

  • Verify left and right turn signals and hazards both work.
  • If the signal still “hyper-flashes” (blinks fast), double-check the bulb is fully seated and that you replaced the correct bulb.
  • Check that the access cover is fully secured so it doesn’t rattle.
