šŸ”§ 4Runner - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your 4Runner’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp assembly. To replace it, you’ll remove the tail lamp from the body, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and install a new bulb without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp as you pull it free so it doesn’t scratch paint.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Inch-pound torque wrench (specialty)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Microfiber towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440A / amber) - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440A / amber) - Qty: 1 (recommended: replace both sides)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Lay a microfiber towel on the bumper corner under the lamp area to protect paint.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Locate the two 10mm nuts on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (you’ll see them when the liftgate is open).
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove both nuts.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Hold the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (away from the vehicle) to pop the alignment clips free.
  • If it feels stuck, use a trim panel removal tool gently at the seam and pry a little at a time. Pull straight back; don’t twist.
  • Once loose, support the lamp so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.

Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (the socket will twist-lock into the housing).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new 7440A (amber) bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock it.
  • Line up the tail lamp’s alignment pins/clips with the body holes, then press the lamp straight forward until it seats fully.
  • Reinstall the two nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then tighten with an inch-pound torque wrench (specialty): Torque to 5 NĀ·m (44 in-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Test the repaired side: turn on the hazard flashers and verify the rear turn signal flashes normally.
  • If it ā€œhyper-flashesā€ (blinks fast), recheck that the bulb is fully seated and that the socket is locked in place.
  • Verify the tail lamp is flush to the body with even gaps.
