đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Open the tailgate so you can access the tail lamp screws.
- Verify which side is out by turning on the hazard flashers and walking around the truck.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp screws
- Open the tailgate by hand to expose the inboard edge of the tail lamp.
- Use a flashlight to locate the two fasteners on the inboard side of the tail lamp.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners
- Use a Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the two screws.
- Set screws aside where they won’t drop.
- Torque: Factory torque is not typically specified for these screws; reinstall snug by hand (do not overtighten).
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back
- Grip the tail lamp and pull it straight rearward (away from the bedside).
- If it’s stuck on the alignment pins, use a plastic trim tool to gently help it release—do not pry on the painted bedside.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Locate the socket for the turn signal function (it’s one of the twist-lock sockets on the back of the tail lamp).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some types may take a gentle wiggle).
- Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Align the tail lamp locating pins and press the lamp straight into place.
- Reinstall the two screws using the Torx T25 screwdriver and tighten snug by hand.
âś… After Repair
- Turn on hazard flashers and confirm the repaired side flashes normally.
- Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) to confirm the brake/turn function operates correctly.
- If it still doesn’t work, swap the bulb to the other side as a quick check for a bad new bulb, then inspect the socket for corrosion.
