🔧 Sentra - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll access the rear tail lamp from inside the trunk, remove the lamp fasteners, then swap the turn-signal bulb in the socket. This fixes a fast-blinking signal, a warning on the dash, or a rear turn signal that’s out.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulb cool if it was recently on (it can burn you).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp as you pull it out to avoid scratching paint.

- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Switch ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
- 🔦 Open the trunk and set up good lighting so you can see behind the trunk trim.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct side and bulb
- Turn the hazard lights ON briefly and walk behind your Sentra to confirm which rear turn signal is out, then turn hazards OFF.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Replacing both sides helps match brightness/color.
Step 2: Remove trunk trim access on the affected side
- Use a flashlight to locate the trunk side trim panel behind the tail lamp.
- Remove the push-clips using a trim clip removal tool.
- If your trunk trim has a small cover flap, open/remove it using a Phillips #2 screwdriver if needed.
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp fasteners
- Locate the tail lamp retaining nuts inside the trunk (behind the lamp area).
- Remove the nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension.
- Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trunk lining.
Step 4: Pull the tail lamp assembly outward
- From outside the car, hold the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (away from the body).
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle while pulling straight back—don’t pry hard against the paint.
- Keep the lamp close to the body to avoid scratches.
Step 5: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (the socket that aligns with the amber turn signal area).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
Step 6: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket using nitrile gloves.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers; use nitrile gloves.
Step 7: Test the turn signal before reassembly
- Reinstall the bulb socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock it by hand.
- Turn the hazard lights ON to confirm the new bulb flashes normally, then turn hazards OFF.
Step 8: Reinstall the tail lamp
- Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body grommets and push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Install the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension.
- Torque to 5.5 Nm (4.1 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall trunk trim
- Reposition the trunk trim panel and reinstall the clips using a trim clip removal tool (to line them up) and hand pressure to seat them.
- Reinstall any screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn on left and right turn signals and confirm both rear signals flash at a normal speed.
- ✅ Check that the tail lamp sits flush and doesn’t wobble.
- ✅ If it still “hyper-flashes,” the wrong bulb type may be installed or another bulb is out.
