🔧 Pathfinder - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Pathfinder’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the rear tail lamp housings. The job is mostly gaining access, twisting the bulb socket out, swapping the bulb, and testing operation.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first; they can burn you.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- Flashlight

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the liftgate for access and keep it supported fully open.
- Set your flashlight in the cargo area so you can see behind the trim.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which rear lamp you’re servicing
- Look at the rear turn signal that’s blinking: on your Pathfinder it’s typically in the outer tail lamp on the body (left or right side), not the liftgate piece.
- We’ll access it from inside the cargo area.
Step 2: Remove the cargo-side access cover (if equipped)
- On the same side as the failed signal, find the small access door/cover in the cargo trim near the tail lamp.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to carefully pry the cover open.
- If there’s a retaining screw on your cover, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
Step 3: If there is NO access door, loosen the trim enough to reach the socket
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop the edge clips of the cargo-side trim near the tail lamp (only as much as needed to get your hand behind it).
- Work slowly so you don’t crack the panel or break clips.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Reach behind the tail lamp and find the bulb socket for the turn signal.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
- Use a flashlight to verify you’ve pulled the correct socket (the turn signal socket should correspond to the amber/blinking function).
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style on most Pathfinder tail lamp sockets).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket using nitrile gloves.
- If you’re unsure on bulb type, match the part number printed on the old bulb base and buy the same type.
Step 6: Reinstall and test
- Reinsert the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise by hand until it stops (snug, not forced).
- Turn the hazard lights ON and verify both rear turn signals flash correctly.
- Reinstall the access cover, or re-clip the trim back into place by hand.
âś… After Repair
- Verify left turn, right turn, and hazards all work.
- If the new bulb still doesn’t work, swap it to the other side as a quick check (bad new bulb happens).
- If the flash rate is still fast, the circuit may still see an “out” bulb (socket/corrosion/wiring issue).
